Stages Power Meters to Hit South Africa

I personally find it unaccurate because it only measures your left leg out put. Your paying a lot of good money for something that you want to work properly. Ill go for a powertap.

I would not call it inaccurate, but rather "half a power meter", because it measures half your power and multiplies it by 2. Hence, it probably costs less to make, and should be half the price.

I want to convert my Mtb to 1x11. In order to do so I would need to run a x9 stages crank arm and the xx or xo crank on the right. My OCD just doesn't allow that!

Having one leg measured isn't too much of a concern amongst the power meter gurus.

The new Pioneer meter is quite cool where, with the matching head unit, gives you the full pedal stroke data, on both pistons. Pretty PRO

Been using Stages for quite a while. Before that I used a SRM. Stages within 2-4 Watt of the SRM. By the way the most expensive unit is the Cannondale Si unit. The rest of the units will be much cheaper.

And as I understand, almost nobody can say one power meter is 100% correct. So in your example the Stages might even be the correct one and the SRM out by 2-4 watts.

In the end it's whether the measurement is consistent that counts the most?

Agreed, BUT, PowerTap and SRM have been 3rd party verified for their accuracy, consistency and durability. No power meter will be 100% accurate - SRM is within 2% and PowerTap 1.5%. Stages? I agree that 1-3 watts difference between meters is not a huge issue, but I have heard a lot of talk of the units having water and sealing issues around the battery cap. Yes this would be covered under their warranty but lets see how they get on in the local market...

For example you have a Sram Red crankset, you want Stages, are you going to sacrifice your left crank arm and fit an aluminum Rival one in place of the carbon? Also you have a Sram Red BB30...no units currently available. - Just saying.

Like my bathroom scale, consistency is key, yeah, andy dude

I did exactly that.. Have done around 2000km with the Stages and haven't had any issues whatsoever. I compared it with my powertap initially for 4-5 rides (before ditching the PT) and the numbers were very close.

A little birdie told me a few things. (I'm not making these as fact. It's what I've heard. Take it of leave it)

The reason Sky changed from SRM to Stages is because Stages automatically recalibrates where the SRM doesn't so the guy's were having to through away alot of the SRM data because of this. i.e. calibrated at the start of a stage then you climb over a 1000m and the temp changes etc. even a small change 3% makes a big difference on 400W.

Stages have sorted out the battery sealing issues and the issue with it going through batteries like crazy.

Stages are working on carbon versions but unlike metal which is uniform to a degree, carbon is not and the different layups make the flex/torque algorithm more complex.

As for the Cannondale crank being the most expensive, well technically yes but because SRAM wont supply Stages with just the non-drive BB30 arm due to there manufacturing process if you wont a BB30 meter then you will have to buy the whole crank from Stages/Omnico and they have taken a hit on this in order to reduce the cost to the customer..

Omnico are also bringing in complete cranksets for purchase. As well as offering a trade system where if you buy a new bike/crankset and want to put a Stages power meter on, then Omnico/Stages will buy the non-power meter crank arm from you and send it over to the US to be turned in to a power meter and then sold.

so are you saying I should hang on a little bit?

I have no eta. But If you look at some of the new comers to the power meter market in the last month or two I would hold on as prices are dropping big time.

Have a look at PowerBeat it is a independent left/right power meter that uses the same system of measurement as Stages and its compatible with metal and carbon cranks so Stages shouldn't be to far behind.

Although is not as clean in its design at $499 I'll take one. http://www.dcrainmaker.com/2014/08/watteam-their-powerbeat.html
