Hmm, my left elbow tells me Froome will try win today and take an early stage. Its not a big mountain and all the main GC contenders should manage it easily but its the early psychological points everyone will be looking for.

I think Movistar however will be wise to this though and are going to set a cracking pace which will stop any attack and shield Quintana.

Should be interesting.

Not sure what 'Berto will do, he showed yesterday he is present and correct and forget about him at your peril, but to be honest I dont think he will be a threat to the overall GC.

Uran will need to be wide awake, but without a strong team like Movistar to defend him he may find himself a bit lonely.

We've got our first attack of the day, with Pim Ligthart and Luis Mas Bonet jumping off the front of the peloton.

Lloyd Mondory, Elia Favili and Thibaut Pinot have set off in chase of our leading pair. The gaps are quite small at the moment, with Ligthart and Mas Bonet only holding a 19 second advantage on the peloton.

It's still our duo out front with a gap of 44 seconds now. However the chasing group has changed complexion. The riders trying to make the break are Daniel Teklehaimanot (MTN-Qhubeka), Simon Clarke (Orica-GreenEdge), Elia Favilli (Lampre-Merida), Peter Sagan (Cannondale), Jimmy Engoulvent (Europcar), Johan le Bon (FDJ.fr).

Wildcard for the Vuelta - Esteban Chaves. GC contenders will have a mild sorting out today.

After 42 kilometres the gap just keeps going up and is now 12:24. At this rate, Mas Bonet will be the leader on the road before long. The average speed for the peloton over the first hour of racing was a relatively sedate 39.9kph, which could explain the ballooning gap.

Outside of the Vuelta, news came through today from WADA that Xenon and Argon gas have both been officially added to their list of banned substances.

It is a tad cooler today than it has been for the last week, with the mercury settling at 29 degrees for now. We can expect it to get a little hotter as the day progresses however. The forecast is predicting temperatures of up to 36 degrees, but it could get even hotter than that.

Yeah i think Froomie is a bit worried about Quintana who is ? 36sec ? ahead...did u see Sky and Froome sneak the one sprint yesterday to pick up the 2 second bonus

Im a fan what can i say,

and i got him for 10 points i think.

He should get me some points in the TT, some puncher stages and will hopefully land in the top 10 GC,

TBH i never knew he wasnt BMC's main guy until it was too late.

I quite like the bonus seconds the stages offer at this tour. I also think that Froome will go for it, he might need every second he can get as he is already 38 of them behind I think.

Will still throw my money the way of the Sherpa though...
