“It was bad, bad roads! This asphalt – it is not an excuse – but it has nothing to do with a time trial in my opinion. Compared to last year [the roads were] much nicer, but this is how it is and we have to do it. But I hope they look for better roads than this.”

Initially the fastest rider in the provisional standings and then second by the end of the stage ten time trial, Fabian Cancellara was later bumped down a place to third as a result of a penalty handed down by the race judges.

Cancellara’s deficit was later revised to 18 seconds, with the seven second time penalty dropping him three seconds below the rider who had been third, Rigoberto Uran (Omega Pharma-QuickStep)

What was the penalty for?

Another day of GC drama

Apparently Quintana is not badly injured and believes he can still make it count.

Let's see...

At just 150km and with a finish at 1,200m it’s easy to think of this as a short and inoffensive stage. However the profile doesn’t do the finish justice as it’s a 10km climb at close to 10% average but with steeper ramps of 14-15% towards the top. In short this makes Alpe d’Huez look like easy and it’ll be a decisive day.

Bike Tech: one small observation was OPQS riding with their rear quick release skewers on the wrong way around. Why? The lever is used to tuck the rear mech cable in-line with the frame. The photo shows Tony Martin and Uran was spotted with the same.

If the Sherpa is not too badly injured he will surely try, but I can't see him make up that deficit on Conto...Podium will be more realistic but then again, he did make up almost 3 minutes at the Giro (although against a slightly weaker field and in some 'suspicious' circumstances).

If he isnt injured he can surely make up most of his lost time on Valverde today alone.

Contador is a different issue all together and i highly doubt Valverde will come close to him.

I think Movistar will back both today and decide at the end of the stage.
