My 3rd one this year. Did the first 2 on a roadbike, absolutely hate a roadbike. This year I am doing it on my mtb, dual suspension 29er Epic. Desperately hoping I will be much faster than last year, cause mountain bikes are awsome. :D

5th

1st was 2008 - beautiful conditions. Next 2 were the windy ones, and then last year conked out at the 80k mark.

Last year I tried to do it on my Reign X. Should have worn my knee brace - by the time I got to baby chappies I was done. Knee conked out. Was on track for about 5 hours, but I just couldn't go any further.

That was on Hans Dampf and WTB Weirwolf. Going down the hills was fun!

This year - back on roadie.

Dissapointed in you bro.

Also keep in mind that you are going to be out over lunchtime . When I did that with the boys a few years back, we packed sandwiches and stopped at Smitswinkels for lunch. Great fun that! But if you are in a rush, take something solid for the body around your normal lunch time and that is easy to munch while riding. Somehow it works better than just a diabolical energy drink or goo or gel. It's like the body knows it is supposed to get something solid. Because steak is difficult to carry, try boiled baby potatoes with a bit of salt on, or a sarmie with cheese and Marmite. I also like droewors or sliced biltong. That's my very unscientific nutrition advice for the Argus. Racing snakes that finish the whole thing in 2h30 only needs water and energy drink or gel, but us normal people (racing tortoises) have special needs!

yep 2 gels & 1x500ml bottle of water, anything more is just extra weight, imagine one extra jungle oats bar =30grams, Nooit Bro!!! Lol!!

I won't disrespect my Super Gravity Vertstar Muddy Mary and Trailstar Rock Razors by putting them on the tar for that distance...

See? Simple reasoning :)

Besides. My roadie is rocking flats. So I'm not completely off the rocker.

I must admit I fitted slicks to my Epic. I am convinced she will pay me back with a horrible dismount somewhere in my future. Bike looks terrible, Tour de Stellenbosch this weekend, then tour the ppa, then Argus. Then some nice new knobblies.

Should I put slicks on the Reign X? :) Would be *** funny.

Or Crossmarks / Small Block 8's even. From the trash bins at my LBS...

If you put skinny slicks on a proper mtb, the gods of cycling will put one of those lampshade things around your neck, you know, like the vet puts on a dog to prevent him licking his wounds! ;) Only you cannot see it, but everyone else can! :D

14years I had a set of 700c wheels for my F3000SL. Worked a treat when travelling and could only take one bike. But there was a nice Ti road bike hanging in the garage waiting for the weekend centuries

Agreed.

Plus my 180mm coil marzocchi isn't exactly built for smashing out the KM on the road. No lockout... Can just ramp up the compression damping to the max, dial in a lot of preload and then remove the rebound damping.

I shudder just thinking about it.
