Hi All

Was looking for a speed sensor for my polar HRM on gumtree when a guy responded.

We transacted but the next day mailed to say it was cracked and didnt want to send it only to find it faulty.

Sounded genuine.

He said he has just recently quite working for Shimano and had spares etc

Then says has a complete POLAR watch that he can do at a great price.

Again transacted via CASHSEND another R1000 bucks gone. that was the last I heard. He sounded genuine seemed to have some knowledge of the product. most communication was done via cellphone and odd mail

Ofcource all contact has vanished on the numbers he was using, and no response on Gmail account.

He was using NEVILLE DU TOIT as his name and was supposedly from Kimberely.

BE AWARE GUYS -

WHAt goes around ...comes around NEVILLE DU TOIT !

I will be laying a charge of fraud, would like to see if RICA & FICA now actually work !

Warren in Cape Town

Thats why I will rather pay more than deal with someone who needs to send it to me. Problem is these idiots are messing it up for those that are legit.

See this is where Roux's rule comes into play, people with a decent post count on here and or have a good trader rating are the only ones I deal with.

I dont do scamtree unless its local and I can collect with cash in hand.

my wife was unfortunately a vitem of a similar thing. I have since spoken to Andre Snyman from e-blockwatch who informed me of the following:

  • the perpetrators scan social medis and e-trade web sites looking for items they want or post adverts and wait for you to contact them.
  • they mostly work as part of a syndicate.
  • the syndicate has several recycled pay as you go cell numbers.
  • once a number is used they turn it off and wait for several weeks/ months before using them again.
  • the numbers are not Rica certified.
  • most of the time the initial communication happens on a Monday and the deal is concluded before week end.
  • the perps send proof of payment with ID copies etc that are all falsified.
  • they will never bank with the same bank as you and will claim that the payment will clear as its takes several days to clear between banks.

that's what I have found out and hope it helps someone else to avoid being taken by the same pricks.

Yeah this stuff is getting out of hand for sure! I buy and sell a lot of stuff on Gumtree, but have got out of my old ways of rushing and thinking someone else will snap it up. I only do stuff over the phone, and i only deal in cash - hand to hand transactions. This way i am always satisfied with the product before I hand over the cash, and i make sure i have randelas in hand before i hand anything over. I meet in a public place like a garage or shopping mall. Even better, a wimpy, and then crack on with a breaky after the sale, haha. Unlucky though man, people are always trying to trick you.

I have dealt with quite a few Hubbers with great results . How do I look up their rating or add to their rating.

You go to the person's profile, check under Market Place. You'll find it from there.

This procedure to post trader feedback should be sticky'ed in my opinion.

Its really easy to give feedback. The main problem is that people dont do it.

Often people only sign up here to sell something and are gone again after that.

Dont buy Gumtree stuff which you cant go see in person. Also personally, i wont buy anything over a grand on Gumtree. Then i rather spend a bit more and find a place like thehub where you can check someone's profile out better.

Also if it is too cheap and it looks like a guy that knows nothing about cycling but he is selling a 50k bike for 5k then obviously its stolen and either stay clear if you dont want to get your hands dirty or get the cops involved and catch the guy.
