And what's happening to the good Dr's case?

All gone very quiet now. Next we hear the case has been dropped due to some silly reason like "insufficient evidence" or the Investigating Officer cocked up somewhere along the line.

And another drunken killer walks free!!!!

It is very sad how we have become prisoners in our own country with all the violence and killing on the roads. Sitting ducks we are.

I trained at the watt bikes at Virgin Active Point this morning. Indoor cycling, the way forward.

Unfortunately the reality is NOTHING will happen to anyone involved in taking a cyclist down.  History shows this.

So, relax people, if you get killed on a bike you are on your own....regardless.Sign a Living Will while you can.

Sorry for the morbidity but it actually IS a reality.

Let me know if anybody is convicted for hitting a cyclist and I am not referring to a "slap on the wrist". I get that for vloeking other people at work so really, it does not help.

We have to get real sometime here in Africa.  Feel very sorry for the poor bloke killed in PMB at the Shova though.

Having buried a few cycling mates in 30 years of cycling may have made me a cynic , which I am actually not but for the PPA to call on Government for stricter laws is a joke . Look at our strict laws on driving under the influence . Does it stop people from driving under the influence ? Does the by laws on using cell phones stop peple from doing that ? The Gov has no sympathy for us participating in an elitist sport . Though I must admit the W Cape Gov is doing a lot ...cycle paths etc.

We will have to protect ourselves . Like webdo in our homes .

RIP Johan so so sorry .

Klipheuwel and Botlery are my favourite roads to cycle on. Both had had deadly incidents, first Dr. Roux a year or so ago now Johan. We can be glad that both the bastards were caught. Thanks to the vigilant citizens out there that made a point of getting involved. Kudos to them.

I ride past Dr Roux's memorial everytime I head out on my bike. Its a constant reminder. I love riding, but are not blind to the risks. I do what I can to be safe, and have to trust that I'll make it home ok.

On my commute to work this morning I had a bit of a scare, I then chatted to a colleague about it and his response was "the driver are all gunning each other in cars, why should they care about a cyclist"

Which isn't far from the truth

So what can we each individually do?

Lets get some suggestions going! I'll kick off with these. Please add what you have thought of!

1. Tackle the mindset of all of the people in your circle of influence. Family, friends and co workers!

Get them to somehow understand that no matter how badly behaved a cyclist can be, he\she will add less than 30 seconds to your trip but those could be the difference between the trip almost having any delay and someone's special person return home to continue living a life with them.

2. Become super vigilant about your own interactions with cyclists on the road and don't allow anger or frustration to put their lives in any unnecessary danger if you encounter them in this state.

3. ....
