I dont understand why the system has to be fair? You enter PPA, you get in before all the plebs and punters. Simple. If you want to ride THAT much that it drives you to facebook and the hub to complain, join PPA, take a week to enter with no issues and carry on with life.

Its not a right for people to cycle the Cycle Tour. If you dont like how they do it, make your own one as big as theirs and show them how to do it.

See the following link pertaining to Boston Marathon :- http://www.runnersworld.com/boston-marathon/all-in-the-timing?page=single  I quote " To slow the marathon's growth and preserve it for competitive runners, Semple and Cloney got more serious about limiting Boston entries." ; "Fairness is an important ethic in road running. It is not always achieved, but it should always be the goal."; " The Boston Marathon, a private entity owned by the BAA, is free to establish whatever rules it chooses. But among the runners who work so hard to get to Hopkinton and celebrate so joyously in Copley Square hours later, it's also a sort of public trust. If Boston enacted fair-across-the-board qualifying times and fully disclosed the makeup of its starting field, it would live by standards as high as the ones it sets for us."

The fact that the entries were sold out within 8 hours is a clear indication that there is an inequality between demand and “supply”.  It calls for a new controlled system to be introduced.  Ek dink hardop ......... a system whereby all first entrants are limited in some way or the other to enter for example for 3 consecutive calendar years only whereafter it is followed by a 3 year sabbatical where they are not allowed to enter etc…….……?  (Take note I am merely giving an example to start a thinking process.) Perhaps there is a Mathematician on the Hub who can work out a fair system which will derive at an acceptable balance of for example  50/50 split between new entrants and those who have entered before.  The nature of the current system is in essence based on a first come first serve basis waar vinnige Fanie bevoordeel word by verstek daarvan diegene wie die groter beursies het om deur middel van "charities" 'n inskrywing met 'n vet beurse te koop and is of such that no long term goals can be achieved to attain a healthy and fair balance between new entrants and those who have entered before.  Is there any new system in the pipeline or discussions in that regard?

i for one, am *very* wary of claims made the entries sold out in 8 hours! yea, sure, maybe the entries they made available - but I am sure there were ALOT more in reserve.

A company that claims "sold out" - but then has a "lotto" draw for another 3000 entries that just "happen" to pop up makes me wonder how much is fact and how much is marketing fact.

There are lots of riders who finish the race after cut-off that, don't finish, didn't bring their timing chips (wasn't always checked at entry) so just looking at official finishers is a bit misleading.

Not sure why you would say charity riders are not committed? If I got my charity entry for nothing yes I agree, if I had to pay a few K's for it I would think those people are even more committed.

I find myself in a few thought places about charity rides. After doing a few world fun ride championship tours, there is a little itch to make it more about something bigger.

The first thought was possibly the chaelly (spelling?) foundation that Tankman was punting. I think it would be awesome to pull a person behind you in a buggy. I met one of them on my last trip and was kinda cool talking to them. You had to get the child and the helper through the ride. And you pay a few moola to the foundation as well, so the fund raising is done and you help someone else out.

The other thought is to upgrade my entry to help a charity (leaps advertised on the Hub, as en ex educator it appeals to me). Just pay a bit extra and have a jol anyway - or go for option A, or option C, which is just pitch and ride, and stop and sip tea and ride and stop and sip champer's and ride and stop and have a beer...... and and and ... you get the idea.

Slowbee you just planted an idea in my head, I usually chase a sub something but due to doctor's orders I must take next year's version a bit slower. I might as well upgrade my entry and see if there is a charity I can help while having a few beers & giggles along the way...

I think the problem is that there appears to be a disproportion in the entry process to the actual amount of riders pitching up on the day. This in turn seems to suggest the majority of charity riders are not committed cyclists whether they have participated in the event before or not, as they finishing rider totals don't match the limits advertised before. Current limits are around 35K if I'm not mistaken.

As this is probably the highest profile single stage road event in the country it becomes more than unfortunate to have these sought after entries seemingly go to waste...

Finishers:

2013 was 31046

2012 was 29839

2011 was 28692

2010 was 28033

2009 was 25575

2008 was 28192

2007 was 28646

True, seems as there are a lot of people that look out the window and then not pitch up.

I reckon 25% of the poeple complaining would not do it even if they got an entry. When demand far out weighs supply, a boycott (which some people on facebook are planning) does not work, just enables someone else to get an entry :P

A big issue is riders without timing chips.....

Simple solution, if you enter and don't start with the compulsory chip take a suspension the following year. Did Not Bother 2015 = No invite 2016.

Unless you get a doctor's note from Dr Grace Mugabe....

I don't see the issue. Some techie made a mistake, they apologised immediately. Move on and get over it.

They did not apologise immediately... it took an hour and 40 min for me to be told sorry...

Ja they must be at a stage where they cant be bothered by some as they will always have people entering

once I entered a race in Sweden, 35000 entrants, all signed up within 3 hours. Their online system actually coped with that. If you were late, you didn't get a spot. No matter how many times you had raced the thing before.

Vätternrundan in Sweden?

“A new registration process was put in place for the 2014 event that allowed riders to pre-register their details in early October and then complete their entry in early November - this reduced the chances of the entire IT system collapsing and to ensure no cyclist misses out on a place due to technical hitches.”

“Large groups of more than 40 participants can make reservations before November 4 for an additional fee. To prevent that most attractive starting slots all go to pre-booked groups, no more than 50 per cent of the places for each hour of the start can be allocated this way.”

I noted that entries are also kept aside for International riders who would have difficulty in competing for entries on a first come first serve basis due to time differences.

I thus get the impression that the first come first serve principle is applied pertaining to a certain percentage of entries in the Vatternrundan.

Die Vätternrundan  is ‘n voorbeeld van ‘n massa byeenkoms waar die registrasieprosedure aangepas is weens die groot aanvraag na inskrywings.

Okay so it has been badly organised. Okay their outdated systems can't handle big volumes. Okay they messed up the ballot. Okay so they show no loyalty to their regular riders.

But what really gets to me is their arrogance and 'don't care' attitude. It is not the race that attracts the entries. It is Cape Town that attracts the entries and Argus needs to relook at themselves and ask if they are really attracting visitors to their Fair City.

My wife and I and several friends spend a week every year after Argus holidaying in CT. This year we are coming because of pre-bookings and despite  no entry. This will be the last year we visit CT.

Your not allowed to start without a chip. They check at the start and make you buy one if you haven't got one.
