Road Tyre Advice

Hi all!

So, I'm pretty new to cycling, only been on the road about 6 months, so I'm not that clued up on tyres.

Basically, my bike came stock with Continental Ultra Sport 700x23c tyres, which at first as a newbie I was completely happy with. Having put about 1200km into them over the last 3 months that my opinion has changed considerably.

I've had 3 punctures in my last 3 rides and have found that the tires have been pretty shredded by debris on the road. Now, I guess this could just be my bad luck, as until the last 3 rides I had no issues whatsoever, but it is worrying to see how quickly the tyres are gotten damaged by the road. (I run the tyres at 100psi front and back)

I'm wondering if it would be worth it to perhaps invest in a better set of tyres, and if so, what would you recommend? I wouldn't want anything racey - would just want something that is puncture resistant and reliable.

Thanks in advance!

Stewart.

Ultra Sport are useless, had punctures every other day. The rubber is so soft that bits of glass and debris get embedded in the tyres. I definitely recommend Gatorskins. No more punctures. Definitely worth the extra cash.

I've been using the GP4000s as my racing tyre & I've been riding past race events that has gravel, stones, glasses.
Not a single puncture to this day since I've used the set.
(but don't try your luck on riding through metal shrapnel; correct pressure & basic maintenance on the tyres are needed to kept them in optimal state)

Gatorskins. I race them on my tandem as its not fun getting a flat on a tandem at high speeds. Have 2 sets of racing wheels(different clusters) and both have 23mm up front and 25mm at the back and in the last 3 years have only had 1 puncture at OFM last year.
