IDIOT without helmet

I've seen this guy a few times riding in Brackenfell, always with cap, never helmet (at least for the times I've spotted him).  I usually just shake my head and carry on my merry way.  Idiots will be idiots and will not be told otherwise.

So yesterday while coming down Chappies towards Houtbay, some dude comes riding up towards Chappies also only wearing a cap, a truckers cap...while completely covered in BMC kit...

I shakes my head, I continues my ride...

What DOES irk me though, is when I ride through Melkbos / Duynefontein, and the idiot mommy's are riding their commuters with the kiddies on their bicycles, and NONE of them are wearing helmets...IN THE TRAFFIC!!!! Do these stupid people not care about their kids? The one time I made mention of this, I nearly got my head bitten off by an "over-protective mother"...spot the irony there?

Chill Boet, this isn't Australia you know.

Doesn't exactly work for us considering we're in the southern hemisphere too... but anyway....

Let Darwin work his magic, he's riding as part of what looks to be a club and yet no-one suggested to this clown that maybe he shouldn't ride?

People who don't protect themselves are one thing, my pet peeve is when you see father/mother and child riding together and the parents are well kitted and protected but the kids look to be forgotten in this area. These are the cyclists I worry about, Surely if mommy and daddy don't enforce a helmet, then it can't be that necessary?

I've turned my kids down for a ride on more than one occasion for no helmet, my (now 18yr old) son had his bike confiscated more than once for being bust not using his helmet on the way to school, it was walking distance so the bike was more convenient. This is a non negotiable item for me.

At last year's 24hr World Champs in Canberra, I'd just put my bike back together, and was riding around in circles (on tar) in front of my pit area just checking that everything was in working order when the Race Commissar drove over (yup, drove, in his ute) and told me that he was issuing me with an official warning for cycling without a helmet. If he caught me again, it would be a $300 fine, and a further transgression would be disqualification.

The previous day a guy had died on the course after face planting off a small drop off, and he used this as an example as to why I should have a helmet on. He didn't see the irony in that the guy who lost his life was in fact also wearing a helmet, but I wasn't going to point this out...

I put my helmet on, not to protect my brains, but to make the Aussie happy (and the fact that $300 is probably equivalent to the bond on my house!).

I'm quite surprised at the general attitude and reasoning in this thread

Imagine for a moment you are the driver of a car involved in an accident with a cyclist. Now what if that cyclist dies because of head trauma that would have been minimized or even prevented if said cyclist was wearing a helmet. Would you still argue that not wearing a helmet is nobody's business except that of the cyclist?

After 5 incidents where a helmet saved my pip I would rather be wearing one on head impact. The pic below is taken from an incident this weekend, better that damage in the pic be on the helmet and not my head.

I have not noticed, but has anyone said "helmut" yet ?

One so far.

I must confess, i rode to the shop in my slops and a cap the other day.

Of more concern is the amount of aggravation of my beers that i bought at the LBS was caused on the bike...

As a few have pointed out; this is not so much about the personal choice this guy made to break the law, but more about the message it sends.

Firstly, we are already battling with a poor image in the eyes of motorists and non-cyclists. Unfortunately to be able to expect them to obey the laws, we should do the same. It's that simple.

Secondly, I teach my kids to always wear helmets. Seeing a cyclist breaking the law is not helping in any way.
