Sunburn!

I remember growing up in the 70's and 80's seeing ladies lathered in baby oil and tin foil reflectors....considering what we know now...the mind boggles that this was ever the case!

It's crazy! There are still a lot of people who don't realise (or just don't care) how damaging the sun is to your skin.

See a lot of joggers in my neighborhood over the weekends, jogging in the middle of the day with no shirt on and those jogging broekies. They'll probably smell like sizzling bacon when they pass you.

one thing I do know is that in a country like South Africa..the cost of sunblock should be as low as possible for all to apply in mid summer...but at prices that range from R100 to R500 for 100ml or 200ml that is not the case

I think I read somewhere that european countries subsidise the cost of sunblock?

The Nivea spray is crap with water, its too oily. The moment you get into water, you will notice the oil drifting on the water. But it works great out the water.

Everysun made an aqua range, used spf 50, it is the best when it comes to being water resistant.

My problem with sunscreen for cycling is that it tends to run into your eyes if you sweat a lot, and burns which makes you cry and the cycle continues. Piz Buin made an excellent Active sunscreen in 30 SPF that would never run but now they're only bringing in the SPF 15 version. I've moved to the Cetaphil Daylong SPF 30 and it's almost as good at half the price although if I find the Active 30 again I will stock up. Look for "very water resistant" or "water resistent" on the label.

Just a note on the SPF scale. An SPF of 30 will block 97% of the less harmful UVB whilst a SPF of 50 will block 98%, not quite the gap you would assume.

This stuff really works for me, have not got burnt when I use it playing golf, cycling, skii'ng, and holidays in Mauritius. I use the spf 30 and just reapply after swimming etc. It absorbs into your skin easily and does not leave a pale face barrier cream effect afterwards.

There is also a spf 50 but I've never found the need to use it when I use the spf 30 one

This stuff - also the SPF 30.

Only problem I've found is missing spots because it's invisible...

Also SPF refers only to the ability of a sunscreen to block UVB rays, which cause sunburn, the more harmful UVA rays cause deeper skin damage, so look for a sunscreen that lists both UVA and UVB protection.

I use brake fluid

You joke - I've heard of a friend of a family friend who rubbed brake fluid on his knees to help with his arthritis (or some crap like that).
