Is there a standard for which side the front brake lever goes on?

Some companies brakes only allow the rear on the right because of cable length, I did a brake upgrade which required me to switch the brakes around. I did kiss dirt unlearning however painful lessons teach you the fastest!

......no, it is not a matter of only allow.

If I started riding now I would start with Right = front. Unfortunately I am an old dog and I have no inclination to do the learning curve so all my bikes are R=rear. Strangely enough it doesn't bother me on the moto.

I started off with back-pedal braking, then right rear ços my next bike only had back brakes, and from then I think I was solely right rear, until I got my Reign - at which point I decided to go right front just to be different. SO far, it's going well. Sorta.

But then I am ambidextrous, so for me that's not much of a problem. My rationale for swapping is that I have more fine control in my right hand, which is useful for front brakes. I may switch back in the future, but I dunno. I guess I'm just one of those people that doesn't care.

Running right front because i used to ride motorcycles before i started riding mtb.i think left front is more of a standard build as all the guys i ride with ride that way round. Left handed and right front works fine for me.

Means nobody can ride my bike haha

Well, so far, a whole lot of answers contradicting each other ...

I've noticed here in switz that the majority of new bikes on the shop floor have the front brake on the left. All my bikes (mtb, road and tri) i purchased here I had to ask the shop to change them around which they did quite willingly at no extra cost...ultimately in this situation the standard is what the customer wants.

As a motorcycle rider, I prefer the front on the right lever. My wife however doesn't ride motorcycle, and prefer the factory default layout. Have had a few near misses when riding on her mountain bike!

In terms of swopping the hoses around, it's a pretty straight forward job, as long as you don't shake/bump the hoses or levers when changing over. Get someone to hold the hose for you while switching (two hands isn't enough) and tighten really nice. Have had the LBS change a shimano setup for me this way, watched while they done it, and from there done it myself with the help of the laaitie. No need to bleed, as you won't really lose any fluid (IF you don't bump it!). Once rearranged the hoses after swopping around, and a couple of days after switching over and the one lever started a slow leak (would sweat a little fluid after a ride or two). That needed a new olive (little brass bushing) to correct, had the LBS fix it for me.

Suggest that you have it on either side but just make all your bikes on or off road the same.

That way in an emergency your reactions will have the same results.

I prefer my rear on the right as I tend to feather that brake much more than the front brake. Front brake tends to be a more steady pull.

I once borrowed a beautiful Giant Reign when I was down in Cape Town. Only realised the brakes were opposite way to mine when I grabbed a proper handful of "rear" just as I was hitting the switchbacks at speed... As I was dragging my bruised @ss back up out of the bushes I vowed to never ever ride a bike without rear on the right again.

Why would you want to grab a proper hand-full of rear? Did you want to destroy the trail?

Looks like Cape Town was wanting to teach you a lesson...

Ha ha Yoh learn something new every day.

Perhaps you could maybe order right rear or left rear? I dunno, am I just being crazy?

Next development......single brake lever and reservoir for both front and rear disc brakes with a 30/70% brake force distribution between front and rear (almost similar to vehicle but switched around). The front brake will have an ABS system, preventing any unnecessary lock up. Then there will be enough handlebar space for a cable activated rear emergency brake.......fool proof system.

Why, doesn't your left side of the bar stick out much further than the right? Its pure logic.

These are the bars i've been using:
