Obnoxious comments generally stem from the fact that users are anonymous.  They feel like they can say what they want without consequence because they think they are protected by anonymity.

Having dealt with some of these problems myself this week, I can tell you that legally anonymity does not exist.  Dealing with harassment, slander and protection orders can be attained very easily.  thehubSA will have to either by choice or court order cooperate with police investigators- exposing the alleged perpetrator and all electronic correspondence, account information, IPs etc.  These offenses are dealt with just as severely as real life/ non-virtual offenses.

A recommendation would be to create user transparency by removing pseudonyms and having thehubsa enforce user transparency.  Terms and conditions should be setup that violation of not using your real name, will result in current and future banning from the site.

Getting people to take responsibility for what they say is the only way to effectively deal with these problems. Transparency generates its own self governing rules of conduct.  Without that, constant over site and enforcement will always have leaks and require far more constant attention.

If people are really concerned about remaining anonymous for some reason, then a suggestion is that if you want to make a comment in a post, it can only be recorded with a real name.  Then if you have a genuine concern and want to create a post, it will keep you anonymous.  Anonymous comments (and anonymous by virtue of pseudonym) within posts are where the problems are.

If you have something of value to say, criticism or rant there is no reason why a person needs to hide behind an avatar.  Honesty inspires honesty.  Likewise dishonesty spirals towards more dishonesty.

so whats your real name then?

Oh the irony

I love thehub but it has been getting quite oppressive, some posters are pretty fixated on trying to bring out the worst in others, things would be much merrier if all and sundry were focused more on trying to bring out the best in people.

I'm happy to use a fully transparent profile.  If everyone does it then it is the norm.

Trying to challenge me to use my real name, in a world of pseudonyms, yeah thats a great idea!

I love thehub but it has been getting quite oppressive, some posters are pretty heavily fixated on trying to bring out the worst in others, which is depressing. Things would be much merrier if all and sundry were focused more on trying to bring out the best in each other. Although that's not ever going to happen it would be nice if things moved firmly out of the dark and into the lighter side of life.

No irony.  He's probably just uncomfortable with the idea of transparency and accountability.

Are you not responsible for yourself?

Are you not responsible for yourself?

To a small degree, didn't say I was perfect and neither would I say you are innocent in that respect either but I'm not the guy walking around with a flame thrower as some enjoy doing. And its very easy to get drawn into a spat when people are so latently aggressive, not surprising many threads rapidly devolve into a mess.

There is a pattern as anyone on thehub can attest to, the baiters come baiting and then keep the fire nicely fuelled from there on.

I'll most likely get shot for this, but so be it. And let me start off by saying I don't condone the actions of the runners that led way to the thread (you all know which one) I'm talking about.

But I looked though some of those comments and thought to myself do I really want to be associated with this? There are comments much along the lines of motorists throw at cyclists on News24. And now the same guys saying "share the road" and "we have rights" get all aggro and insulting about runners on their tracks. Like I said, I don't approve of the runners actions, but there are limits.

Put the boot on the other foot and think how you'd react in reversed roles. So in short - Matt, this is high time.

A reality check by admin will often be required in an online forum... so adapt to any new guidelines for the sake of the form... but lets not loose the banter !!

I like loose banter

I doubt the proposed changes will make any major change to my enjoyment of the hub from a cycling point of view or my behaviour here (perhaps some may differ on that though)

Like others I do enjoy the banter to a certain extent as much as the next guy though :)

You the man
