How To...Increase Average Speed ?

I've obviously read lots on upping watts per Kg to increase average speed and doing intervals etc etc... I feel like I've hit a bit of a plateau and any gains at the moment are quite minimal, but I can't help feeling I may be missing a trick or three wrt to technique. I'd like to hear how fellow Hubbers have upped their average speed through technique rather than fitness and training. Things like consistency, flow etc. come to mind. I'd really appreciate some tips and some shared knowledge on the subject. Cheers...

Koeksny....works for me

Seriously though....unless you are a total disaster on downhill tech sections you won't gain massive time there...

Hills, make them your friends

Get a 29er ...

Seriously though, I have learnt to use all leg muscles in stead of just pushing on the pedals. Pulling on the up stroke etc have work well for me in resting certain muscles during climbs.

MTB, tri or road?

Many people use the down hills to rest and recover or just don't maintain the same intensity going down, make an effort to pedal hard on the downhill's don't let your HR drop, use a 53x11 or a bigger gear than the guys around you to maintain your heart rate at the same intensity on down hills. Difficult if its a road race with bunches but it does make a difference when your ride alone like in a tri or mtb

I agree on the hills, downhill gains will be minimal. Unless you are seriously technically challenged.

seriously though. I know they say you can gain more on the uphills, but I usually lose a lot on the downhill sections, I prefer to go as hard a possible on the climbs and cruise on the dh sections, i enjoy myself more that way, but it doesnt help with Argus times......

Perhaps you are as fast as you'll ever get . . . . .

Gains can not go on "ad infinitum"  . . . . otherwise Eddy Merckx  would still win the tour . ..

Ride with guys that are faster than you, and try to keep up :whistling: .
I've increased my average speed by 2-3km/h in the last month and a half by doing this - I also realised I wasn't pushing myself as hard as I could when riding solo or with my normal riding buddies
