I have been camping and caravanning for adout 60 years, including a 9 month stint while cycle touring USA and Europe. All my bad experiences came from when using tents, be they single person or the family tents we tried. Caravanning is the way to go. Solves all packing problems and throws heaps of comfort and convenience into the mix, especially when the weather gets miserable. There are some really good used van buys out there for between R50k and R60k. The 1995 Jurgens Expo only weighs 790kg so it is easily towed by a 1600cc petrol car, sleeps 4 and fits under most car ports.

Tents? Thats for hardcore types only.

That's Jamaka -

Lots of different camping spots there and has never been overly busy or noisy when I have visited.

Been there in April this year.  Had a big fire going through farm and campsite.  Lots of damage.

Only part of campsite destroyed.  Still some nice places left

You right.  I tried to link the view with campsite (wrong assumption)

yep the spot in the photo is the furthest spot in the main camp site, right on the river with nobody else in sight.

Really? They have been a bit unlucky, a few years back it was huge floods that hit them

(Reply) i twice had a hyena come within a metre of my head while sitting around my braai at Crocodile Bridge (Knp). A month later the same(?) animal savaged a teenager in his tent.

Happened to me too.  Blighter was scratching against the pup tent. I  had to chase it away.

They can become very familiar

Some time ago there was a big spotted hyena called...Spot that would frequent the campsites in Savuti.

Big male.

We were braaing and I was walking back from the tent and fell over the brute as he bolted from the fire light

I'm planning on going there for a few days during the July holidays, is it worth while?

Driehoek and sandrift down the road are also worth it if Jamaka doesn't float your boat.

I assume you are going to camp (not staying in houses).  If it was my decision I would go for Sandrif/Driehoek or Kromrivier .  The burnt veld/campsite not nice (that was in April).  Sandrift also have some MTB trials (google it) and some nice wine tasting

We will be staying in a house, don't want to do the camping thing in July. [emoji6]Too much of a chicken at the moment.

We stayed at a house about 50 m from farmhouse at Jamaka, very nice views.  Enjoyed it.   From there we traveled to Sandrift to swim at Maalgate and do wine tasting.  Unfortunately Wolfberg cracks and the Arch hiking trails still closed due to the fire in the area.  One can still do Stadsaal caves, Maltese cross and Sneeuberg.  All these trails closer to Sandrift

Thank you, we had the whole family together tonight, so we asked everyone for their input as to where they want to go and what they want to do for a 8-9 day breakaway. So the kids are going to give their ideas as well and then we will have to decide very quickly.
