I think the rolling swim start idea is awesome.  Not sure about the honesty self seeding part as some idiots will always stand in the front.

But the rolling start over 50 minutes will stretch most of the field out nicely.  Not a bad idea for full IM as well................  Your time starts when you start.  Maximum of 10 athletes to start every 10 seconds.

So that means the race will take 50 minutes to get everyone started.

Will they have a mat at the water's edge? Or do you also have to run the beach as well? That will also split people up.

Interesting idea. Curious as to if it will work.

I also like it, but purely from an intimidation point of view.

I for one will stand near the back of the pack and start with the slower people as I'm not a strong swimmer.

I would be in two minds about it, I prefer the less disturbed water so would want to start a little further back but then would be swimming into the groups in front.

Its hard to gauge which group to start in.

Why not just ask people to submit their best result in the past 2 years with splits.

If you have no result you fall back to the unseeded slots.

Exactly, ironman themselves must have loads of data from previous events too..easy enough to get into a database and correlate.

the idea of a rolling start is very cool though ...fighting 500 other ppl to get to the first buoy is always painful

I like the idea of a rolling start, but then again never done it before so don't know how it will affect my swim.i am sort of between 2 minds as to where to start ie don't know whether it is easier to try and draft someone a little faster than me or swim in a rhythm in slower group?any ideas?normaly swim 3 km ballpark 55 min coming out of the water relaxed

The only con is age groupers going for a win in their age cat.  Weather changes might encourage some strong okes to start later (if a headwind is predicted early on and dies at 9h30 for example).

Alternatively an age grouper can target a rival by starting 20 seconds behind him and then stick with him on the bike / run and know he has a win in the bag.

From my side I think its brilliant.  No mass start means a lot less stress and adrenaline.  More controlled start without traffic,  Transition should be less crowded and so will the road be.

At least they are trying something different - thats all we can ask for.

Why don't they just do age group starts with a 10 minute gap?

Male Pro's start first

 5minutes

Female Pro

 10minutes

All other female Age groups (or split up if there are to many)

 10 minutes

Male age group 18 - 30

 10 minutes

Male age group 30-35

10 minutes

Male age group 35-40

10 minutes

Male ager group 40 - 45

 10 minutes

Because in a perfect world if everyone starts in the correct "self seeding" position then the field will be perfectly spread out at the start of the bike at least.

Sorri I thought you were talking about a less congested swim.

With the current format (large fields, lap courses) I don't think it is possible to get a perfectly spread (no drafting) cycle. With the way IM events are going (everyone wants to do them) it risks going the same way standard / Olympic distances went.... Remember last century when drafting was not allowed in the Olympic distance.

Maybe if they increased the time gaps drastically between age group starts and had 1 lap routes, or reduced the number of entrants (shakes head)

55 min for 3000 metres is on the good side ..I would swim in the stronger groups.
