Dog Bite

If the dog is owned it is highly highly unlikely it will have rabies - problem is though by the time you find out if you have rabies it's too late. off to the doc for you for a tetanus at the very least...

Bitten by a stray dog on the beach years ago. There were 2 and they attacked our puppy - we were just kids.

Off to the doc for stitches - as it was badly torn - hung off my arm as I lifted the pup- and a tetanus shot. The doc considered rabies but the cops caught the dogs and could see that they were "owned" and well looked (snort) after - wasn't unusual for dogs to run on Melkbos beach alone then. So opted not for a rabies jab.

You can perhaps go back to TM at the same time tomorrow and see if you can meet up with her again to ask but going on assumptions here ( yes the mother of all.....) walking on TM - indicates she lives close by so in a good area, own a schnauzer - pure bred expensive dogs - I imagine the shots shout be up to date.

Personally if the dog is roaming off lead I would be more worried about infection from eating all sorts of icky stuff on the route...

Worst case ever my Aunt got Hep C from her dog eating and rolling in infected vagrant poo and it probably passed over to her when she had to bath the dog.....

Assumption is the Futher of all Muck-ups... Rather safe than sorry, OP, Get yourself treated....

Thanks for all the comments.

The wound is small and well treated, Tetanus up to date, so Rabies is the only concern. That's the thing. If there is a chance of 1:100000 ... the dog could just come back from a farm holiday in a rabies area, whatever, you just don't know.... and by the time you have symptoms you are toast.

GP this morning it is ... :-P

I don`t think a visit to the doctor is necessary for a little bite of a house dog like a Schnauzer . Bethadine should be applied and then it will be fine.

Your opinion is not current proffessional medical opinion on dog bite treatment, and I urge the OP to be a little more cautious.

Definately a tetanus shot if you have not had one in the last 5 years

Clean the wound professionally - especially if it is deep

Disinfect - properly

Close the wound - stitches if neccesary, glue or tape if minor.

If the dog looks well cared for:

Call ALL the vets in the surrounding areas and ask them what the incidence of rabies in the area has been - than make a call in conjunction with your treating doc, based on that if you want to do the rabies shots too.

If the dog looks wild and uncared for - then call vets and spca's locally and make a call on the rabies - again in consultation with your treating doc.

If you don't go with the rabies shots - educate yourself on the symptoms and seek treatment if you develop some of them.

Edit - and 1 other thing - the owner of the dog should fund all your medical expenses - dogs have to be on a leash when not at home in most cities - municipal bylaw.

I was attacked by two ridgebacks on my way home after a ride a few years ago.

The wounds were completely treatable at home but a visit to the doc was advised.

As memtioned above, better safe than sorry.

After the bite, was the dog ok?

Thanks V12, that is more or less the plan. Appointment set for today.

I don't think I will find the owner lady again, the ship has sailed.

Good luck - cleaning the wound is a bit of an issue now.... unless it is open...

Quick lesson on cleaning puncture wounds:

Using straight or curved sterilised surgical forceps and sterile disinfectant soaked swabs - insert in puncture wound to the bottom and clean... replace swab and repeat till no detritus comes out... then close it up - as approbriate...

Local anaesthetic sometimes helps - especially if you are going to stitch it afterwards, or want to avoid a clout... :)

doctor for you - dogs teeth have all sorts of nasties on them!

Still rather be bitten by a hound than a human.

Got one on my ankle that i never had treated, been over a year and its a bit of a lump under the skin now, will probably need a doc to sort it out.

Get your gp to have a look and consider pulling that capsule out - never know when that goes off.... 3 minutes with a scalpel and forceps.

Usually that lump means it was not cleaned properly, and something was left behind.

I'm with V12 - a bit twitchy about dog bites since that youngster from Underberg died a terrible and tragic death from rabies afew years ago. Sure, I understand he got it from a Lesotho stray he picked up - it didn't even bite him; just saliva in a cut I believe.

Rabies injections are not fun, or cheap. Had to complete a course after a dog bite recently. Rather safe than sorry. Just expect light sensitivity and headaches for a few days after your first shot.

And would suggest a tetinus shot

so, you're saying that the size of the dog is correlated with the likelihood of infection or tetanus?

that's just DOF.
