When do you service your bike

In terms of mountain biking, when do you service your bike?

 

1) Before a race so its running smoothly but most likely to get smash up during the race

2) After the race so that all the damage from the race is sorted out

I'm lucky enough to have more than one MTB, So my "racing" one only gets used for racing and never gets trained on. So it gets done between races, But If I had to choose id get it done before a race. But my bike gets a full wash and lube after every race anyway with a proper service as required depending how much racing I do.

Thanks, ya I give my bike a solid wash and lube after every decent ride. Should just but the tools and service myself then can do before and after

Have always and Will always service my own bikes.

From Fork servicing right down to replacing bearings in hubs, etc.

Slowly buy tools as you go along, its not rocket science.

 

My thinking is if my bike packs up during an event I only have myself to blame.

Nothing would p*ss me off more than paying good money for a service and having my bike give me hassles. 

 

EDIT: Fork service every 50 or so hours I would say, but I always keep a check and if need be do it before that.

Wash once a week and lube once a week... 

Try and service 3 or 4 weeks before a huge event, to iron out any small issues, allow cables to stretch, etc.

And I agree, bike shops never pay as much love and attention to your bike as you will. But I think servicing a lefty fork is pretty much close to rocket science so I'll give that bit a skip

Yeah but a lot of the tools in those kits are apparently really bad quality and others I already have...will just get the uncommon tools and go from there

I have never serviced my 'whole' bike in 1 go .... I replace as things break/wear out or I feel like an upgrade (may happen quite often)

 

I do all  my own maintenance except forks (ja ja I know it's not rocket science). Also just buy tools as I have needed along the way.

When I break something, which is quite regularly.

As of this morning, I broke a spoke on my rear wheel.  I simply wouldn't know how to start fixing that.

.

rear sus requires a new bearing somewhere, as it wiggles alarmingly...ho hum

.

have never serviced the front or rear suspension and it seems to be ok after a year of hard use.

I have never serviced my 'whole' bike in 1 go .... I replace as things break/wear out or I feel like an upgrade (may happen quite often)

 

I do all  my own maintenance except forks (ja ja I know it's not rocket science). Also just tools as I have needed along the way.

Same here, I repair/replace as needed. Every couple of rides the bike is up on the stand getting the chain cleaned and a quick check so you can pick up any loose bolts, sticky caliper pistons, dodgy crank or wheel bearings etc etc.

 

I test the suspension through its range of motion when I remove the shock for its aircan service. My fork gets the most regular inspection though, the stanchions are cleaned after every ride (and the shock) and every 25-30hrs the lowers come off, seals are cleaned, foam ring rinsed in clean oil and reassemble (Fox....). Every 3 or 4 months the fork is removed and the headset checked and cleaned. If you leave things too long it just costs you time and money....especially when your nearest LBS is 60km away!

 

Always give yourself enough time to iron out any issues as well when you replace items. Don't tinker and piddle about the night before an event or big ride etc...
