Spoke with Tinus , restaurant owner at Jonkers, and also stated that almost all trails if not all are gone and that the fire is worse than 2009 from his perspective and having been there then as well.

yep, wind hasn't helped much

red skies this evening ....... taken from a balcony overlooking the bay in Somerset West ..... looking toward Tokai side
covered in smoke all of last night and today

real frustrating

So sad, and yes, I feel sorry for myself aswell, love that place, bought some of my bikes JUST to ride Jonkers. Heard rumours today about arson, and the reasons behind it, but wont post here. Bad day for most of us.

I think we can al do with a bit of closure. Or can you really not say without getting sued?

they did evacuate the building - as well as the agricultural buildings further up the valley. all the animals were moved away as well. it was done purely as a precautionary measure - to rather be safe and move everything in a "controlled" manner, than when the poo is in the fan and all hell is breaking loose

edit: whoever made the call to evacuate was smart !

yes!  last time was a mad scramble to get enough horse boxes etc. to get the animals to safety...prevention is better than a mad scramble!!

Only thing I own are my bikes, so cant sue for much. Such a loss, I am devestated. Jonkers is my happy place.

Ok so the process from here? Cape Pine to salvage what they can? Decide on where to plant again? Unplanted areas to be secured with undergrowth against erosion? Then only can we think about trails again?

Pretty much. Also have to wait for the root structures to stop burning. That could take a While. Also they need to see if they ARE going to replant again. Not that clear cut.

Feels like my home burning down. I built my bike with Jonkers always in mind....I love that place.

We live just on the other side of the mountain in the Banhoek valley and the fire seems to be making its way down here at the moment. Not cool.

Yeah, in that long Jonkers thread on here ,(too tired to look for now) IIRC there is talk about the eventual winding down of operations to restore back to fynbos. This might hasten that process? Just my speculation though.

Damn, hope it doesn't get too much further...

You're not going to like the news...

There's a chance that Cape Pine will decide to replant to recoup their losses (in the millions), whihc will mean no building for years.

Bennet Nel will be talking to them once everything has calmed down and everyone knows the full extent of the damage, but for now I think it would serve us all well to forget about riding JOnkers in the next 6-12 months and focus on supporting the recovery efforts.

Also, this is a good time to put on your explorer hat and go see what else is out there.  So many excellent trails I never ride because it's just easier going to Jonkers.

Delvera, Simonsberg, Bottelary Hills, Welvanpas, Rhebokskloof, Grabouw, Tygerberg.

Also, with Jonkers possibly being off limits, will there be more willingness and impetus to allow the rehabilitation and expansion of the Eden and paradyskloof trails?  Stellies locals will need somewhere to ride.

I checked on the way to work now, looks as if Eden, G-Spot and the blue gums above G-Spot where saved from the fire, so at least there's still a bit of paradise left for us.

Its still burning deeper down Blaauklippen towards the Keerweerder farms!

The North west that came up during the night turned the fire on itself.

I remember discussions around a 30 year exit lease.

What comes into play now I think is the regeneration of the natural growth after the fire. To replant may threaten the survival of the seed bank that is about to sprout.. could be worth considering but still just speculation.
