MTB etiquette on trails

Stravassholes always have right of way! You'll recognize them because they ALWAYS have their race face on, even when getting kitted up in the parking lot!

Those things need to be banned!!!

That or any riders with that hub are not allowed to free wheel!!!

Not to hijack, but does all that noise make the hub any better?!!!!!

I have the Hopes and the noise drives me crazy. Love the hubs, but all the clicking does is remind me that I'm goofing off and should pedal more. Cadence training perhaps?

They automatically make you 10 kph faster. it's a constant need to keep the buzz going as fast as possible so that it eventually resembles a swarm of angry, ppollen deprived bees.

Tried to keep ahead of the ticking/buzzing last week but decided to jump the bushes. They pushed me to speeds...saw my life flash before my eyes

snip snip

(as you would driving a car), but this weekend (my first ride) someone said "wrong side" and now I'm not sure. What is the correct etiquette?

Don't assume the other rider knows what he/she is doing and that they are right.

It always cracks me up when people dive into the bushes to let me past.  Especially when it's not a race and I'm happy to just cruise behind

I'm one of those. As soon as I'm aware of someone behind me on ST I go bundu bashing. I don't like the feeling of being the rabbit getting chased down.

Your safety comes first on a trail. It's not a race. The rider behind you is responsible for passing you safely when the trail allows. Keep your line and move over if you can.

I always feel bad when some-one goes bundu bashing to give way on singletrack as I am happy to wait for the proper space to pass safely.

Like Maxxis said, no use going off track into the thorns, ninja rocks luring in the grass and who know what other nasties await, just chill. If the person behind you is indeed a tjop and gets impatient. Let him/her pass unsafely at their own peril.

I do however understand some people are nervous when riders are behind them, thus the need to rather let them pass.

I always tell the person I caught on ST (yes, it happens from time to time that there is someone slower than me) to relax and ride at their own pace, I'll pass where it is safe. I then inform them which side I will pass if / when it is safe to do so. I then also make the pass as quick as possible.

Fortunately tjops are few and far between. Most times I get "shame- you didn't have to do that- thanks" - a pleasure to share the trails with those. The ones that come up behind you when they could've seen you from a long way off and then slam on brakes .... Grrrrrr

Whag Maxxis said, don't worry, most will be quite happy to wait. I let people know that I'll be overtak8ng when I get a chance, and then tell them "Overtaking on ...". I find most people will try to move over, and I thank them too

I'm glad it's not just me then... I feel bad when I know a much faster rider is behind me on a section of single track I can't move over on. On Sunday I was finishing a ride at Modderfontein coming down the last section before the waterfall going, by my standards, hell for leather, when I felt someone behind me. I thought if I go off the track I'm going to see my poepal, if I brake to move over he may ride into me, so I kept my speed as high as possible and the second I could I let him past I did so, apologising profusely. He was cool about it though. AND I think he was on a single speed...

Nobody needs to apologize for going slowly down a trail.  We're all out there having fun.

It's the guys riding down the jeep tracks and ignoring  the single track that should be apologizing!

I was riding with a fairly new rider on the bottom section of the Spruit on Sunday, and was trying to give him some tips on some of the more technical areas and trail etiquette in general, on the single track section between William Nicol and Ballycare  there was a large group of mostly ladies coming up the trail so we pulled over and waited for them to pass, while waiting for the last rider who was lagging, a group of Stravholes came bombing down the trail at speed pushing through between us and the last rider of the group coming up making her actually leave the track into the bushes, it's not like these were lean racing snakes, they were of the beer and pork pie weekend warrior variety much the same as myself, it just amounts to a lack of consideration for others.

The lady thanked us for being gentlemen and we were on our way.
