Since I moved to the Cape ive noticed a lot of bikes here get stolen off of bike racks on cars

its obviously a local sport to crack car racks even locked ones ,just check out the stolen bikes thread on the hub.

Surely cape cyclists should be encouraging one another NOT TO LEAVE THE BIKE ON THE CAR!!

we live in a cycling crazy city ,no one cares if you hump your bike into the corner of the office and if you don't really need it and aren't actually going to ride it  ,leave the bike at home .

you wouldn't leave your laptop or camera bag in the car ..

you can all flame me for this but it just an outsiders perspective sometimes that helps..

I also dont understand it. Yet, you see it at every race. Only conclusion I have is that get your bike stolen, is much easier than selling it. Insurance pays, new bike.

My bikes go on the back of my bakkie. If my wife asks me to stop for bread on the way home. I take my bike into the store with me.

I once went full on grocery shopping with a surfboard. I took it into the mall and left it at one of the stores while I went to get a few things. This is South Africa. That guy lurking in the parking area who says to you. Ek sal mooi kyk bossie. Maybe you can trust him maybe you can't. But if someone tries to take your bike off your rack. Chances are he can't stop them.

Not only cape town. But it does seem a bit worse down in the cape. I'll be honest I used to leave my bike on my thule when at a race venue before or after the race while not at my car but of late I keep it with me at all times. Id rather keep my current bikes than go through the schlep of getting paid out and buying a new bike.

So, what must one do?

You WANT to go to a race...and you WANT to "chat" to your mates afterwards...so what can be done? how more secure can one get than locking one's bike onto a bikerack?

Get a ute and throw it in the back.

Your bike, like your surfboard, should ride in the car and never on it. Preferably up front and all other people crammed in the back.

Just a question, do these guys lock the bike rack and go or do they have added locks on the carrier?

I always lock the holding clamp and have added two extras cable locks just for incase

A few weeks ago I went into the Spur at the Waterstone Village in Somerset West for my usual Wednesday morning brekkie.  In the car park I see a S-Works on a Thule bike rack, not locked.  They guys were also sitting in the Spur eating a brekkie, with no line of sight to the car.

Wheels off and in the boot it goes...or in the back of a locked wagon/hatchback/canopy.

A mate drove to Eastern Cape on holiday and they were trying to steal his bike off the rack while he was inching through the crazy Umtata traffic. Motorist behind hooted and the thieves just ignored him. This motorist eventually got out and klapped them.....

"Officer I really don't know how it happened, I was sitting in the traffic when suddenly I selected reverse by mistake and then I panicked and floored it. Honest..."

How can people not lock their bikes on to a carrier? That's the question I always ask myself.

Amazing isn't it.

I lock mine on there even if we are not stopping anywhere and if we are due to stop somewhere they get stored inside the car.

It's basic common sense really.

It's also why I won't buy any of those hang on carriers. A couple of snips with a knife and it's off the car. 10 seconds, tops
