Eish 2017....

Who'll be gunning for a spot among the 500 available slots?

Don't think I can fit in a qualifying event. I wonder how many of this year's entrants the qualifying will eliminate.

The guest house I was staying had about 10 people who were just joy riding and in the open seeded we often caught the team riders fairly early.

Any thoughts?

I think the increase from R3500 to R5000 will be interesting to see how this is taken by the other teams, a rather steep increase. Wonder if you get a discount of R1000 for everyday that you did not appear on the timing sheets at the 2016 event, if so, free entry :D

I would only pay that increase in fees if ASG is willing to refund me if the timing is a fokop again.

This year they promised it would be fine, so we sucked it up and paid more. I will gladly pay more, but then I want a guarantee in writing, that there will be compensation if its a mess up again.

If I pay for X, then they deliver less than X, surely my payment should be adjusted accordingly.

My intention with the post is to correct the speculation regarding the performance of the timing hardware. We have no interest in which events or timing partners that make use of our system, our focus is on development and introducing new functionality to the system.

Having worked in electronics R&D locally, I'm comfortable to say that the Mobii team are world class. Sure everyone can make mistakes, but it really seems like it was a config problem not a hardware issue.

These guys built their own gps unit that had a genius interface, and it interfaced with an action cam(ie gopro) years before garmin brought out their virb system.

not sure what this really means for this event, but mobii are no fly by night crowd (racetec is probably a simpler cycling specific system) but it seems like problems were further downstream.

happy to read what patch says here, as he got his hands dirty trying to help the issues.

It's in writing that Racetec is timing this years event. They managed 30000 cyclists at argus with no problems or excuses.

Lesson, walk before you can run.

wasn't it also in writing that they wouldn't (ock up the results in 2016?.....

It's simple for me, buck stops with ASG. It's moot whether they chose the wrong system, did the right system wrong, got the wrong guys for the right system or got the wrong guys with the wrong system. buck stops with ASG.

Maybe that is the reason for the big price increase - Racetec being much more expensive than mobii timnig

Remember that the issue was not just Mobii's fault there was CSA as well as ASG admin issue that contributed to the over all mess. Blaming Mobii in isolation is a very convenient way to side step the responsibility that both CSA and ASG had.

Racetec could very well do the best timing ever, but if the CSA tannies upload the data incorrectly again, then there would be a mess all over again.

Most of the mess up at ToGH this year was not the single day data like that which Racetec would provide, it was consolidation of that data into meaningful information, like team placements overall GC and time bonuses etc.

So yes, they can time 5 x 30000 entry 1 day races in a row, but if the people take that data and compile it incorrectly, whats the point? Timing a one day race is very different to the logistics of timing a tour. Frankly, from a technology point of view, 30000 data entries (race entries) is not even that relevant or impressive, our DBs run millions of data entries daily each tied to a unique code (chips). Where most of the mistakes come in, is where humans interface with the data. eg: Working out GCs with time bonuses. Having said that, these things can be built and automoted but at a cost.

Thats why I asked for a guarentee in writing that if there is a mess up again (not that it must be timed by Racetec) that there will be compensation. I didnt ask for it in writing that Racetec must do the timing, thats just one of the moving parts.... I want the people who take my money to take responsibilty for the overall delivery of the timing.

What are we getting for R5000? No accommodation for starters, are we getting 3 meals a day like other stage races? No, doesn't seem like it.

R5000 is rough for a Tour that has been a mess last 2 editions and nothing else.

Seems like you're paying R1000 per day to race on roads without road closure, no meals or accommodation. I can't understand why the timing is such a monumental cockup. I won't be back after the 2015 disaster. Fortunately I missed the 2016 edition.

Panorama Tour is 4 days - pretty insane routes lets not kid ourselves and you have rolling closure and the timing is SPOT ON.

Its also a lot cheaper per team of 2.

The racing upfront is as good as any Tour (if not better)

Not sure what to make of this R5000 entry fee. Seems better option to race it which is sad.

You make a very very good point when you paint it like that.

I know for a fact that Racetec has NOT been approached by ASG or any other event leading up to the Tour of Good Hope.

So whoever is going to be the timing - it won't be them.

Are you saying that based on confirmation from Racetec, or the PM that we just got?

I have requested comfirmation from Racetec directly, as I am reluctant to say something is fact based on what another 3rd party says.

With my R5k, I'll book myself a lekke cozy love nest in the Cape for 5 days and ride on my own and probably get better training and my trusty Garmin won't piss me off with incorrect times.

Maybe work in a few Strava KOMs while we are all competitive and stuff.

Sorry ASG.  You are busy plucking the dam from beneath the duck.

Good luck with that.  Eventually it will catch up.
