Hi all,

I bought my MTB about 4 weeks ago to help me loose some weight.

I have registered for my first race and its a 40km.

I can finish a 8km route after work easy and have done 2 heavy tracks with my brother.

one of 30km and yesterday one of 36km.

the 36 I finished in 3 hours with an avarage clime and decend of 450m

What is the avarage time a beginner like me should be able to finish a 40km?

I don't want to win but I really would like to finish in good time.

Cheers

welcome to the hub!

how long is a piece of string...? there are a lot of factors to consider setting yourself a target but you know what? it's your first race - just go out there and enjoy it!

Good advice!

Two goals for first race. Finish before cut-off and enjoy yourself.

Define "good time"

Just go out and enjoy yourself as others have said.

There is only one thing that improves time and that is time in the saddle

All great comments above!

If you have a jol (regardless of what distance you've ridden) and have a smile on your face, you'll get back in the saddle again and again and again and again........

If you push to keep up with the racing snakes you'll smile very little, you'll miss the scenery and you'll battle to get your butt back on a saddle.

It's like eating an elephant.........

Good luck bud!

Just go and enjoy the race, don't worry about times and such, it's about you, for you, that's all that matters is that YOU walk away from the event feeling great.

If you suck at your first race, remember, no one really cares - there are plenty more to come.

Also, it's like anything else... You don't do too great on your own, but when you doing it with others, you just seem to do way better.

Depends. A 40km ride in and around Pta takes me 2 hours or less. A 40km ride in and around the Western Cape takes me closer to 3 hours. Depends on the amount of climbing and the technicality of the terrain. Just ride to enjoy, you only "race" against yourself, and that is only possible once you have set a benchmark. So do the first race, and then from there try to improve all the time.

This reminds me of two races when i started out:

1) My very first and last 70km ride. Thought i had what it takes to do it so registered. Was the most longest ride ofmy lif and my goal: To finish, that's all. when i finally got to the finish line after seeing no ride for a very long time. I finised 4th last by didn't care asi finished and all in all had a good experince. Realized endurande rinding was not my thing.

2) After doing 1 or 2 25km rides i felt i was read for a 50km. Registered for this race called Ukuthulu. It was horrible, loose sandy track that just made it so tought to ride.

It was like 100 degrees celcius and i was sweating like an italian. Inclded in the cost of the race was a change to hold Lion cubs which was only cool if you made it in time, i did not.

I swear i hear lions and rustling in the bushes while i was riding and felt like i was being stalked and a lion was goon acome out and eat me, that is how hot it was and how i truggled.

I did not see another rider for more than an hour and eventually cars were driving past me going home as they had finished the race. Eventually a car stopped and asked if was ok and i said point me to the finish. I found the finsih but of course there was no finsih line per say as it was already packed up as everone has finished and in the pool having a good time. I was was stone last and I missed holding the lion cubs also.

I think i took a wrong turn and ended up doing like 70kms instead of 50kms. It broke my spirit somewhat but it did make me stronger and never lost my thrill for the sport.

So, don't worry about time, distance, where you finish, if you finish, as that means nothing. What is important is to participate, have a good time and learn.
