Patience !.My 9 year old son was not very interested in mtb ing until i took him to a BMX track .  Best place to get them exited and motivated and it teaches basic riding skills .Worst place is to take them is on a trial where they can hurt themselves and make them negative and scared

My 13yr old son also been pestering me. I used to take him around the dam at jonkers to get his fitness and skill level up, then he gets lazy until the interst peaks again. Of late he wants to do some serious trails. Thinking of getting him in at nixon academy next school holidays

My 7 year old twins have just started out, they ride the schools spur series. First event was massive learning curve, the second one they knew what to expect. I find that riding with their peers really makes a difference. It's really helped my boys gain confidence and they really enjoy it.

For me it's about them having fun and learning the skills... The competitive side can come later.

Try find out info on the spur series in your area.

To add to oufy, b spot at bloemendal is also a good trail for them to learn on

Hairy, do you know if B-spot is members only or can you get a day permit. Was thinking of taking my 6 year old there on Saturday.

Out in Somerset West there is the Southey Vines Track. provides a good starting point and its easy to take chicken lines. As of the new updates there is only 3-5 obsticals that will seem intimidating. Only one I don't like is the big wooden berm. Bonus is that its also free access. Just be careful Southey Vines has one rather large drawback IMO once you get used to the track complacency takes over and you can get hurt (See post about shattered elbow). Other than that its a awesome place to start and first place I take friends that want to ride for first time.

My daughter is competing in the Gauteng XCO series at present.

She has a lot of learning still ahead and needs a Coach /Teacher of some type as Dad knows nothing as far as 11yr old is concerned.

who in JHB does the type of courses or training that Chris Nixon offers?

play at nixon, lower tokai, jonkers circular, koeberg, nixon, meerendal short. In that order and take it from there. my boys are 5 & 4, so lower tokai and nixon have been great for them

Hi Where is NIXON. Do the kids need serious MTB's to start off with this rider or would BMX type get them started?

Chris Nixon Cycling Academy, go to their facebook page. Uitsig Constantia. No serious bike required. My one son has a bike with no pedals and the other a 12er, rigid fork , hard tail single speed
