So after 273 posts I think the answer to my original post is - Yes I will probably do the exact same in the future.

(Maybe I am still a sucker)

........but remember to take a pic of the distressed rider............at least we will know that it really happened, have some fun, fight a little bit, chuckle a lot and get a quick thread lockdown

Didn't do the race this Year , but in 2014 I gave a Rider 4 Rennies to eat because He was cramping heavily on the district road climb going towards Nandos ,He was walking like if He needed a toilet badly , The Rider took My cell nr and bought Me a couple off Beers that night , I said to Him its really not necessary , but He insisted the Rennies worked for Him and He wanted to buy Me some beers because I stopped and helped Him . Shucks I felt sorry for the Poor Oke , thinking back now it was quite funny the way He walked up that hill .

I am a female cyclist and was out on my road bike on my own early one morning.  I was joined by a bunch of "dirt roadies"  who all knew me.  I punctured along a fairly lonely piece of road and their collective response was to ask me if I was joining them for coffee later and they all rode off.  needless to say :  karma karma karma - I will return the favour one day.

Was riding in a race a couple of weeks ago and a lady cyclist who I knew had snapped her chain.  a gentleman had stopped to see if he could assist her but neither had the spares ( a quick link and chain breaker ) to solve the problem.  I happily handed over my spares and multitool to discover the neither of the two had any idea on how to mend the chain so I stopped and gave a quick lesson .  hopefully someone will do the same for me one day .

So where you riding this weekend? I want to have a mechanical ahead of you so you can help me fix it. I'll bring spares but no tools. Coffee and breakfast will be my treat.

My response:

I figured someone would know him.

Tell him I am happy he is okay and I am glad he got to finish!, But to not carry an Allen key is really not very bright. And his partner also not very bright to abandon him!

I don't want the hanger back tell him to carry it on him and maybe one day he can also help someone out.

Regards

The better person. Well done.

Nought, you need to know other cyclists! Fail on all of their parts! A cyclist with a bike disassembled on the side of the road in order to repair is a SUPER soft target for the type of criminals who are not interested in theft or similar but are genuinely bent on far more serious crimes!

Ladies reading this thread, please make sure that if you are stranded somewhere along a quiet stretch you walk your bike towards or back to the nearest establishement you can safely wait out a rescue!

. I don't take offense to being asked if I'm ok or guys stopping to help whether I need it or not ... It's chivalry, not sexism

Other day at modders, one of the ladies was new, she rocked up with flat tires, we went to pump them with the floor pump at the start of the trail and some guys came along and stopped - with a here let me help you ladies out - not that we don't know how to - it's just good upbringing. I'm old school - so to those ppl - thanks.

But I will add more cash to my coffee fund.. Just in case.

Uni couldn't agree more,,,if my mom was still alive and she heard I rode past a lady on the side of the road, she would have left me on the side of the road with a flat ear,,,,,I just don't get to the sexism part, then again I am a Neanderthal,,,,it's like the TV LICENCE SLOGAN ,,,,,in my books it's the right thing to do

I have run out of likes and I cannot like this enough !

That fine line between knowing how to be a gentleman and how to be a lady. Being able to ask for help and the confidence for the reply to be a yes or no. And neither party takes offence.

Now if a girl saw me on the side of the road and asked if I needed help, that is a game changer ;)

I got a PM:

Hi NixM

I stumbled upon your post earlier and the story sounds very familiar! My friend *****(fairly big guy) suffered a broken hanger on day 2 and had his "bacon saved" by a very kind lady rider... This was his first stage race btw so I think he was ill-prepared - hopefully lesson learned. Apparently he now knows how to repair and had it fixed that night plus took a spare along for day 3.

******* is honestly one of the nicest guys you will meet, and I can only assume he just didn't think to get your details in the circumstances.

cheers

Well if I was this guy I would tell said friend who had his bacon saved to send you a big parcel of thanks in the form of: (tick where appropriate)

Chocolate

Beer

Wine

Flowers

All of the above
