Hi,

If this is the wrong forum to ask this question i apologize in advance.

I have just changed vehicles to a Caddy Short Wheel Base Panel Van and want to Customize the inside for bike transport, kit etc. I don't want roof racks or tow bar options and something better than using bunjy cords to secure the bikes inside (mtb or road or tri-bike). Can anyone recommend options. Maybe engineering or fabrication places that can assist? I live in PE.

Thanks very much.

1- there are m8 threaded holes in the roof area that I've screwed eyebolts into. Really handy with snap shackles to hang stuff from and give extra securing options. This is where I hang my pack and lid from.

2- I'm going to mount some stretch webbing between those eye bolts as well for some extra storage

3- my bike fits on the right hand side with a bungy cord from one of the eye bolts, around the seat post and through the back securing hoop to keep the bike upright.

4- a bench / just behind one seat would make a really nice storage space and give you a spot to sit if you need to change in the van.

I've also put in a wooden frame so that I can smash a single mattress in the back for overnighting, and have storage underneath.

A mate of mine folds his seat forward, and built a bike stand out of PVC pipes that the bike's back wheel pushes into, and Bob's your uncle. But I think he has the long wheel base?

Anybody made rigs to transport two bikes upright inside a SUV ?

Checking the dimensions of a 29er, with the seat dropped and front wheel taken out, it can fit upright inside a number of the smaller SUV type vehicles.  Toyota Rush, Honda BRV, Suzuki Ertiga (new spec is actually nice).  Seems we could transport two bikes inside, and still have three seats.

Caddy is obviously more spacious .... but if you want automatic the price difference between the options is insane ...

Thinking of how to mount the bikes, as well as the front wheels .... this setup must cater for two bikes.

May well bolt out the one seat in the second row, which would provide bolt holes for a mounting rig .....

Thats a really nice option if you have the cash (not too expensive in the grand Thule scheme of things actually).

Pretty simple to knock up something similar if you are that way inclined

Very nice !

Is the front wheel clamp enough to hold the bike steady ?  Or do you need to support it anywhere else ?

HoldFast actually sells those clamps, not too expensive either.

They are fine for MTB's with shocks or Aluminium/Metal  forks.  If you have a carbon fork you may want to support the bike elsewhere - although I don't think it should be an issue.

I like that "plank insert" with the fork clamps.

I have a LWB Caddy with the 2nd row of seats folded forward permanently....I just roll my bike in and lie it down. I can NEVER have a conventional car....MTB, surfboards, 6 x dogs....

judging by the bikes, this idea seems to have germinated in 2002

The way our lifestyle is going this will be our last "car" ....

The Honda BRV, Suzuki Ertiga, Toyota Rush type vehicles seems to be much more life style oriented.

In the States, Toyota do an 8 seater called the Sienna - basically a glorified station wagon.  All the back seats fold flat and you can easily roll two 29er mtb bikes standing up into the back.

And for family stuff you can get 8 people into the car ....  Very practical...
