Where do our bike(S) go?

On a recent trip to Mozambique, I followed a dilapidated, overloaded bakkie through the borderpost. Tied to the back of this skedonk was a dual sus S Works, mostly wrapped up in black plastic. I could see the "S-Works" on the rear wheel where the plastic had peeled back, so definitely some of the stolen bikes go across the border.

MAYBE THE OWNER OF THE dilapidated bakkie just had his priorities right :whistling:  :whistling: SPEND ALL AVAILABLE CASH ON TOYS

Well, lets just say that the vehicle, its occupants and its other contents were incongruent with the bike.

What's the latest on neil's wheels? I'm sure some of the guys who had bikes stolen recently must have gone to scope at his stock, is it still the 419 version of a bikeshop?

The last thing that came from there was them recovering and returning a stolen bike.

I know with the bike insured 100% that I am a little relaxed at coffee shops, just take the garmin off, because Strava.

Also, if someone with a big stick asked for my bike I would not even take 2 seconds thought about giving them my bike. (Less garmin)

I pay the premium for the luxury, why not use it.

Are you serious?

I've seen a couple fancy dual sussers being piloted by blue-overall-wearing personages traveling through Diepsloot on my daily commute. They really stand out when the vast majority are on Game/Makro specials. Draw your own conclusions.

Just another angle. With the rates of bike thefts going through the roof and them being taken in a number of ways (hijacking, from back of cars, from garages and sheds etc) is there maybe a small percentage of cases that are simply 'upgrades'?

If you have a 2012 Anthem with good upgrades you're literally going to get nothing for it second hand leaving a big deficit. The insurance company can't get you another 26'r Anthem because they don't exist so will pay out on the 29'r if yours grow legs.

Have been wondering about this since a guy I loosely know was trying to sell such a bike with out luck and then coincidently it was taken out of his car a few weeks later and new bike a couple of days after that.

This happened on the Hub earlier this year where some guy was trying to upgrade parts on his (second hand bought) 26" bike and asked for advice. After being told his bike was junk and that he was better off selling it and buying someting decent, he was suddenly in the market for a new 29er at a completely different pricepoint after his bike "got stolen" and his insurance co was paying him out.

No doubt there's a couple of these, but I agree the majority of the more organized incidents - I have no doubt it's some organized crime syndicate behind it.

No one questions the sale of parts, but a fancy bike being sold invokes questions - why you selling etc, frame/serial numbers.

It's impossible to regulate the sale of parts, and with prices the way they are many won't question where it's coming from as long as they're getting a good deal.

Sad but true.

Does anyone know who this scum is? Thinks it's okay to come into my garden, break into my shed and steal a bike out of the shed. Stupid idiot didn't even think to look at the numerous cctv cameras around the place. Please share this photo, let's name and shame the bugger!!
