Saw something on tele the other night how in the UK bikes are stolen, taken to some dodge market and sold within minutes. Scary that 18,000 reported bikes stolen per year in the UK and in Holland 10,000+ per year and police expect it to become alot more in the future.Would like to know what SA stats are like. I never buy bikes off the street, I always do extensive research on the seller and item before buying as I put myself in the other persons shoes and would hate to buy a hot item...integrity and my name is everything

I'd say it's actually lower here in RSA. In the UK the bike theft rings are all over the place, and they just don't care. We're probably catching up, but not yet. I may be proven wrong with the stats, but that's my opinion on it for the moment...

one word patch - CHOPSHOP

as you say they reappear as bits here there and everywhere

how many of us (including me) really ask questions when we buy used upgrade parts on here and everywhere else including thru dealers (who are also none the wiser)

its a bit not a bike

and when you accept that thieves (sophisticated ones) are organised, communicate and move stuff around ,its not hard to believe that they take them to pieces and sell them off as bits and the really exceptionally unique bits (including frames)are just dumped or scrapped

thieves don't pay for this stuff if they think its going to get them caught they just trash it

I have been saying this for years! when this spate of hijackings/robberies started, I suspected someone in the industry is stripping the bikes and selling the parts off, then when the heat is off the frame a bit 6 months to a year down the road the frame then gets flogged on (most likely TheHub) online platforms...

Next you will suggest this individual has more than 1000 posts on the hub!!

Its very difficult to determine if stuff is from a legit source, I try meet at the guys house and have a snoop round with my eyes, if he is selling parts and has no actual bike then I stay clear. If he is selling a bike and has another one that's nicer, also seems legit.

All my purchases have been to cool hubbers :D

Hah, I don't let strangers come to my house and rather meet at a nearby shopping centre/petrol station/my office. They might just be snooping around looking for other items to liberate at a later date.

On a recent trip to Mozambique, I followed a dilapidated, overloaded bakkie through the borderpost. Tied to the back of this skedonk was a dual sus S Works, mostly wrapped up in black plastic. I could see the "S-Works" on the rear wheel where the plastic had peeled back, so definitely some of the stolen bikes go across the border.

I stay in moz and see bikes come in on a regular basis as there is no control on the borders

Yes and why not...I browse the ads from time to time and can see the people that sell often, its not rocket surgery to pick up...Take me for example I have sold plenty stuf in my time and at one stage I had 4 bikes of my own, two for my wife and two for my kids...

Who's to say all those bikes belonged to me thru legit sources? So I am not saying your theory of coming to my house is wrong but a good criminal will be like me, a "cool Hubber" who has the predetermined bikes in the garage and is lekker friendly.

Not saying I'm that guy  but that's my point, the idea is to draw as little attention or suspicion to yourself....

I have an ace up my sleeve, I always ask for a strava profile to see if the guy rides! If he says he doesn't do Strava I know he is a fraudster as if its not on strava it did not happen!! :P
