I have just seen on News24 that MTN are withdrawing as title sponsor of the team .

Not good to read so soon after such a successful TDF .

Hope it is not true ....

Ditch? Harsh words... more just the end of the sponsorship. Brings to end an incredible journey for which I will long be grateful for!

PS: New sponsors are lined up from the sounds of things  ;)

Cape Town - Citing tough market conditions, cellphone giant MTN has confirmed its withdrawal as headline sponsor of the MTN-Qhubeka cycling team.

MTN had spent in the region of R100 million on the team since 2013.

The SA outfit delivered a stunning all-round performance at the recently concluded 102nd edition of the Tour de France, finishing fifth overall (out of 22 teams) under the leadership of team principal Doug Ryder.

Not good news, what an opportunity for Vodacom. Spending around R250m/annum on rugby some years ago, this will be small change.

Finding sponsors is hard, keeping them even more so. MTN did fore sure contributed to cycling. Thanks for getting our local boys to the TDF

Does this not have anything to do with the tool who had a morning live interview yesterday, because he whined about how there are too many "european" riders, and that people/sponsors in south africa should focus more on rider development than competition. I was kind of upset, as you cannot develop riders without exposing them to international competitions. The tool's name was Bonga, don't know his surname.

I have been predicting this for a while now in previous threads. Roll on a company that might benefit from global advertising like DD. Onwards and upwards boys...
