Klapperkop Safety - First Success

This afternoon we held our first event with the Monument Park Community Policing Forum and my expectation was that we would have a relatively low-key event and getting to know each other would have been a success in my opinion. Well were we all surprised, the facts are the numbers (35) was about what we expected but what happened when we went to Klapperkop exceeded everybody's expectations. We did not have enough people to launch a full on operation (that will take place on the 21st) so under the guidance of Marcel of the CPF our intention was to simply recce the area to help with the planning for the 21st, with lookout point 1 being our focus as this was considered the hotspot. Lookout point 1 was where a young family was brutally attacked about a fortnight back and was also where the police flushed out a suspect on Tuesday who unfortunately was capable of avoiding capture.( For reference Lookout Point 1 is the first lookout point as you drive up Johan Rissik from the R21). We were going to walk through the area and identify where these guys were hiding out so that we could give input for the ops.

We did the walk through of the area above Lookout point 1 first and found undeniable evidence of their presence, observation points and sleeping areas were clear for all to see and quite an eye-opener. When the operation shifted to the area below the lookout was were we had our major success. Gerhard of the Pierre van Ryneveld CPF spotted someone hiding in the bush and he was quickly apprehended and searched. What was a found was a knife, pepper spray,a  cellphone and a set of keys. His dress was consistent with the guy that evaded capture on Tuesday and the brown army jacket was also described in the family attack. The CPF guys were simply awesome a photograph was sent to the mom of the family and he was immediately identified as their attacker and the daughter described the knife which matched the one in this scumbags possession. A cyclist helped trace the cellphone back to its owner which was stolen two weeks ago,

The Sunnyside police were contacted and they were there in minutes to take him into custody As I write this I have just been informed that the family has positively identified him at the police station and he is now under arrest and charged with the brutal assault of the young Mom and her children. When I heard how this guy and his accomplices beat up a 9 year old boy and dangled his 12 year old brother over the cliff my blood first went cold and then I thought of this young family that can now start the process of putting the fractured lives back together. This all because a bunch of concerned citizens decided enough is enough and we're going to take back Klapperkop. I met some amazing people today, people that have decided to do something. Ordinary people like you and me, people with families, day jobs, mortgages, cyclists, runners, residents. community representatives, all trying in their own way to make a difference and boy did we make a difference today, one perpetrator in a jail cell and a young family who'll sleep a little better tonight.

So where to from here, many projects were discussed and details will be soon be shared. How can you help? The first thing is to join the WhatsApp group, we're about 40 strong at this stage and there is a concern that we might be open to infiltration so give Trish a call on 0721362911 and expect a verification process of some sorts. Next is, where possible to be present at the events note we were effective today because of the numbers present, further we will be raising funds for projects and your contribution will help. For those of you that were there today you can justifiably hold your head high, you made a difference, thank you.

As far as I'm concerned the low life shouldn't have been handed over to the police, but rather dealt with more "decisively" in private... But anyway, back to reality!

Awesome job River Rat and everyone else involved. It's kind of like the Wild West, let's round up a posse and catch some bandits. Definitely going to try get involved where I can!

Excellent work guys. These upstanding citizens will get the message that we are gatvol and prepared to react appropriately.

But, now the conundrum, where next will they be heading? There is clearly a stated demand for bikes, components, cell phones etc. Where does the demand come from? These scum are selling, but to whom?

Somehow get to the kingpin...

No do not deal with violence with violence....they will retaliate and someone they might attack again will get the brunt of it.

Well done to all involved.
