fanievb Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Running is the bane of my life. Yet I have chosen to train for half Ironman. My goal is to run my first half marathon at a pace of 6:40 per KM. Target is June. Lots of work to be done to up speed and distance. Think that is a sufficiently scary target for someone who has never done any sort of running. my 70.3 training was 60% hill training not only does it help with hilly races but helps a lot with speedwork. due to time restrictions of triathlon training getting "double" benefits from any session is a big bonus. https://www.trainingpeaks.com/blog/off-season-speed-part-1-improving-your-running-with-high-intensity-hill-repeats/ Dullscalpel and EmJayZA 2

ScottCM Posted March 16, 2017 Author Posted March 16, 2017 I am well below where I normally am..by the end of this week 2015 - 763.72016 - 855.32017 - 666.3 so I am pretty much 100km below 2015 and 200 below 2016. Last year I peaked at the end of March/beginning of April..so I am hoping that I will have a much bigger April than I did in 2016 and peak just before the taper For us unexperienced guys and gals here, why would one want to peak before you start tapering and not race day itself?
EmJayZA Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Durbz 70.3 i take it? See you there. That's the one! Depending on how I feel after the 70.3 and what mental space I am in, full marathon training will commence right after that. ScottCM 1
Andrew Steer Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 SNAP, my first TeaTea for years and also last night! Also had the same approach and bombed properly! I'm nowhere near my 5K best, although weirdly I am feeling stronger over the longer distances? Find I'm able to run 15kays holding a faster pace than before but can't come anywhere near my 5K PB of 22min. Once OMTOM half is done, I really want to get some speedwork in and make a full effort at working towards a sub20 5K. My current half PB is an actual 1:55* at GunRun last year. Hoping to get under 1:45 at OMTOM. What are your goals and lets see who gets them? Challenge??? *(For those on my Strava, 2 years ago Gun Run had a major GPS issue and somehow was determined that I ran into the middle of the bay, breaking all my records. I've kept them there as markers to work towards actually achieving!)Sign me up... My goal before year end. 22minutes for a 5km and 1:40 for a 21km ScottCM, EmJayZA and Mudsimus 3

My goal before year end. 22minutes for a 5km and 1:40 for a 21kmIm finally up and running again, so my goal is just to get better than where I were 5 months ago. Sub 21min 5k, 45min 10km, 1h40 half. And then to get strong enough for Sky Run 65k. Andrew Steer 1
Stretch Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 When do you start to train for Comrades ? well....technically...Jan..but this year I had quite a good base going into Jan because I ran my first qualifier marathon in Sept...so despite a lay off of 2 weeks at the begin of Jan (primarily why my mileage is down this year) I slotted back in quite nicely. The nerd in me comes to the fore..... Andrew Steer and Khronis 2
Lexx Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Comrades is a funny old race. You are feeling like a million bucs @50km mark, but then all of a sudden you hit that wall and it becomes a very very long day. Andrew Steer 1
Stretch Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 For us unexperienced guys and gals here, why would one want to peak before you start tapering and not race day itself? well i just dont want to peak a whole 2 months before like last year.....in May your legs are not as tired every week because your mileage is less...and your speeds increase because of that so its essentially like a month long peak...i hope....in theory.....

Girl, running is the bane of my life too. But, I have (very slowly) started to enjoy it- but only slightly. I would swim and cycle my whole tri if I could. I think the hill sessions that fanievb suggested would be a good way to go. EmJayZA 1
Mntboy Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Last year at 7 to go has to be the deepest I have had to dig..EVERSounds painful. Very painful. Pain aside I am willing to bet it's one of your more treasured memories from doing the Comrades. Or do I have that wrong Stretchy? Sent from my SM-J200H using Tapatalk

And some of those speeds. Can't wait to get my 5km down to 30 minutes. I was quite chuffed with my 2 x 5km runs and 1 x 7km run per week. Nothing like being brought back down to earth... I've done a third of what Shaper said on the prev page and I'm doing Ironman and Comrades this year. Got a nasty surprise coming my way I fear.. shaper and Hacc 2
Stretch Posted March 16, 2017 Posted March 16, 2017 Sounds painful. Very painful. Pain aside I am willing to bet it's one of your more treasured memories from doing the Comrades. Or do I have that wrong Stretchy? I wouldn't say treasured...but definitely something in the memory bank. Most treasured memory is the cliche turning onto the final wide open straight on my first...or any shosaloza/national anthem at the start...i get chicken skin just thinking about it Andrew Steer and Mntboy 2
