Yesterday was the end of my 3 week rest period. Went for a bike setup on Saturday. My new bike is all set up and ready to go. I was supposed to go cycling yesterday but due to family commitments that didn't happen. Ended up going to gym and almost died after 20 minutes on the watt bike.... Tough times lying ahead...

Am surprised that you take so much time off after Comrades?

Whilst I have not done a Comrades, after a Full Ironman, I will do a very light spin on the Wednesday following the race and an easy swim on the Thursday to loosen the muscles and help with the lactic acid.  That will be it for the week until a coffee ride on the Sunday.

The week thereafter will be light training, short duration, slowly building time/distance as the week progresses.  By the start of the 3rd week after the race I will be back training, depending on when in the season it is and what races are coming up.

I had better start looking at my training for CT Marathon if only 12 weeks to go :)

Lindsay Parry said 3 weeks... and my couch agreed with him

I haven't done Ironman, the training load I understand is definitely higher than Comrades, but the damage to your body doing a Comrades is I reckon probably a fair bit worse. I've heard this from most people who've done both. Running's impact on the body compared to cycling and swimming is just not comparable. I must say I felt pretty much fine within in a couple days this year (the up run is definitely less taxing) but I just wasn't all that motivated... and there are other things beyond just out legs that need to recover. Those big days take their toll.

I'd be surprised if it wasn't recommended to take at least 2/3 weeks off after full Ironman? Rest and recovery is we know well a very important little box to tick. I mean even Lexx and Stretch have toned it down

I did both this year. I was also surprised by how quickly I was up and running again after Ironman, I remember forcing myself to take off the next week. But Comrades was a very different beast. I went for my first run only this Sunday. The (lengthy) tiredness and soreness after Comrades was something ridiculous.

I agree that the physicality is much greater doing a 12hr run verses a 12hr Ironman, the mental aspect is similar for these long endurance events ... and there is definitely a need to take a break for both the body and mind.....my recovery does not seem to impact largely on either and am no spring chicken at 52 with miraculous powers of recovery.... but I could not see myself going 3 weeks of inactivity.... think it would tire me out more  :w00t:

And agree that rest and recovery are important and I look forward to those weeks during training and tapering !!

Jeez I only run about 5-8km. I am feeling dead tired. We have our local Prawn Carnival 10km night trail run this coming friday, so I will try and push myself against these young okes. Lol.

Will also up the running a little bit in July.

Less than 12 weeks to CT Marathon for me! Time to get back to training properly!

Want a proper PB from this year's effort!

I have my 1st ever 1/2 marathon in 8 weeks, I am going to die. I am struggling a bit with injuries (ankle and back) and trained through it and now my body has 'adapted'/learnt a compensation move and I need to get rid of it. I hope I can get that done soon, so I can start working on some pace....I am SLOWWW!

I'd like to get into trail running soon though, need to strengthen the ankles.

Good luck with that training and event. As its your first, don't try push for a specific time. Rather go slow and finish it as the achievement will give you confidence for all future running ambitions.

One of my clubs ladies had run 18 comrades, at training she generally run 5.30 pace but has never gotten a sub 2 HM , in fact her best time is 2.13. When i asked why she does push herself more in races she said she is there to enjoy herself firstly and secondly she doesn't feel like sitting on the injury bench for extended periods of time just because she went out faster than she needed to.

I started yesterday getting back into it for CT marathon too and my legs could have done with some oil to say the least. I felt like an old lady shuffling around!

The cold doesn't help my motivation to get back out there either. These cold and dark winter mornings make me thankful Comrades isn't in Spring and I'd have to train through the whole winter

Took my "rest" month after the birth of our first child.

Time to start training again.

It is winter, cold and dark, motivation is low to leave mommy and baby.

I have a goal race for November.
