Andrew Steer Posted October 22, 2018 Share So my report back of Amsterdam. I had a goal of a sub 3:10 and got caught up in the gees. This resulted in me running a 3:05 pace till half. The net result is that at about 32km I need to take my first water table walk and then they were regular for those last 10km. I never in my life thought that 5km could be so hard.. But those last 5 were tough. I missed my goal and I'm sure with a bit of vasbyt I could have made it.. But I was knackered. All that said I'm super chuffed because I beat my PB by over 6 minutes. My official time was 3:11:23 and I'm very proud of that. On a side note.. Flat runs are interesting... There is just no rest whatsoever. My quads took and absolute pounding and definitely something I need to work on for the next one. I'll let Ferret report back on his outstanding run Odison.. How did it go?Good job... I have flagged you with SAIDS for possible post race celebrations Flat races are hard work - they're fast though, no doubt Frosty, Stretch, Barry Stuart and 1 other
Craai Posted October 22, 2018 Share So... peer pressured told and I have entered the big C. Was meant to do it this year but motivation was gone after Ironman. It’s going to be an interesting ride with a new bundle of joy arriving in December.... ????♂️ Barry Stuart, tjommies3 and Andrew Steer
Odinson Posted October 22, 2018 Share So, my Amsterdam half-marathon. I'd describe it as a bit of a mixed bag. I was really hoping to run a sub-5:00m/km - somewhere around the 01:45 mark. I latched onto the 01:40 pacer and ran with the group for the first 11km. Running solid splits. Dropped the pace a bit after that, but around the 15km mark the wheels really came off the bus. Shuffled to the finish line. Ended up with a 1:52:49. I'm still somewhat satisfied with a sub-2:00 for my first half. This weekend is the Brussels marathon, so I'm hoping I can improve on my time, although I think there will be more elevation gain/loss than in AMS. On a side-note: had a really crappy experience yesterday morning. My wife and I booked into the Savoy Hotel in AMS (man, the hotels absolutely fleece you during the marathon weekend). Nothing fancy. We were on the top floor, which has a small courtyard connecting the rooms, where smokers can light up and what not. When we got into the room, I cracked the window for some fresh air and forgot about it. 05:30 yesterday I skrik wakker to the sound of someone pulling our curtains back. I fly out of the bed, primal screaming at 11, rush to the window, half ripping the curtains from the railings as I pull them back and see some f*cking **** getting ready to climb into our room. I scream at the oke and he tells me he was "just looking for the toilet". Guy had completely opened the window, pulled back the side curtain and was in the process of pulling back the main curtains. Guy also seemed sober, not like some drunk/high person not knowing what they were doing. Didn't really sleep after that. Ronniek Posted October 22, 2018 Share Geez Stretch I thought it’s just us back of the pack runners that struggle with those last five km’s. Well done on your pb though [emoji106][emoji2534] Stretch

shaper Posted October 22, 2018 Share I watched the highlights of the last hour of the AMS men's race, didn't look like the city embraced the marathon much, not many spectators on route, or even in the stadium at the finish.
Odinson Posted October 22, 2018 Share Well done on the run.. Sucks about the hotel. Accommodation in Amsterdam is ridiculously expensive It's insane and you often don't get what you pay for. Some of the crappiest and most expensive hotel stays I've had have been in AMS.

I've been pre-occupied with our club tour from Germiston to Durban, and our own cycle/run event this coming weekend, that I forgot to wish you well. Wayne Potgieter Posted October 23, 2018 Share I am supposed to run a 21km Auckland Half Marathon this coming Sunday. I have been off ill for three weeks and only finish my antibiotics this Wednesday. I tried to go for a leisurely 5km test run today to feel things out and suffered terribly. Heart rate hit 188bpm which is VERY high for me. I struggled the whole way with the silly little distance. I felt unbelievably slow and heavy. Don’t think I am going to make this Sunday’s half. If anyone wants to take a free entry, hit me up.
