Will make it part of a Comrades LSD then.  Can't imagine that there will still be entries left of the only 150 available, but holding thumbs.

Who has done the Hillcrest 21km? It's on 10 February. Would you consider it a reasonably fast route or not?

Definitely not a fast route. It's 7km odd downhill ... Then undulating... Then 5km odd upphill with two nasty little hills at the end. Good crowd support though.

I'll never ever forget it though.. Was my first ever marathon

40km Trail will equate generally to at least 60km road in my limited experience... you will also be doing some proper elevation in the Berg running a distance like that. Such a beautiful part of the world to run in though - enjoy

DNT is pretty hard - I think 1800m elevation which is probably close to Comrades.

Last year it rained the week before so the course was very muddy and the paths turned into streams which made it quite difficult.

The climb at about 25k is close to 40% - with a little bit of rock scrambling at the top.

I did it in 6 hours and I think I was in the top 30% or so.

My wife did it last year for the first time. She enjoyed it although she didn't get the time she wanted.

I was trying to find it on Strava thanks.    Would you recommend the 20 rather then for such a weekend and considering its leading up to comrades.   Still two months out, but I guess you will take some serious time to recover from that?

Good luck to all running Akasia & Johnson Crane this weekend!

Looks like it is going to be colder weather on Sunday.

I am doing the 21 at JC to start off my races for the year. Looking forward to it, it has been a while since I have done a race. This is a training run for me, so no real time expectations. We have 17 runners from our club doing the marathon, holding thumbs for all of them!

PS. If you are doing JC for the first time, do not take Tom Jones... traffic is a mess. Rather take the Snake Road off-ramp.

Providing you don't roll any ankles you tend to recover much quicker from long trail runs compared to road (in my limited experience.)

I need some suggestions on a new running watch. I'm currently using the Suunto Ambit3. It's a great watch, but I'm looking for something with integrated heart rate.

Not interested in a Fenix, I prefer not to run with a brick on my arm. Currently looking at the Suunto, Spartan and Polar Vantage M. Any other options?

The JC comes straight past my neighbour hood. I'm always amazed that at 6:30 on a sunday morning there are motorists that are in such a hurry to get where they are going that they have to hoot and shout at the marshals.

But what also gets me is that the organisers do very little to alert the public that there will be road closures. One would think some street poles signs or something, but nadda. Only reason I knew it was going to happen is a facebook friend of mine runs it.

dont get me wrong, I'm not complaining about the road closure itself, only the fact that it was not communicated.

I don't have great memories of the 20k route which is the first and last 10 of the 40k route - it was raining for the first 10 and I was tired and miserable and hot for the last 10!

Its mostly out and back, with some parts slightly different on the way back.

I recovered pretty quickly, depends how soon after you need to be back at doing the long runs on the tar I guess.

I got the Forerunner 235 for Xmas...light, screen easy to read, brilliant battery life and with Discovery discount costs about R3800 new.

I got the Fenix 5 plus when it was on special ion the US - you get used to the weight pretty quickly.

The only thing I'm disappointed with is the battery. Its fine for long runs - but the standby time is terrible - not sure if its the all day HR or the smartwatch features but I have to charge it more than once a week which.

My brother has the Garmin 935 and the battery is amazing. 24 hours with GPS and a couple weeks on standby. It does everything the fenix does except music and base maps.

Its also lighter which means the wrist HR works better.

The price has dropped recently so its not that much more than the mid range watches.

I haven't used any of the Suunto's/Polars but the Polar does look nice

Have a look at the Garmin 935 as well.

The 235s battery life concerns me. On the Suunto I get 12h easy in GPS mode. Looking at something similar. For Comrades battery life is probably the b

most important feature in a watch.
