Mudsimus Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 Different race. I chose the easier one???? tjommies3 and Lexx 2
SwissVan Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 My plan was to try and run until the 15km mark without walking the water points. Nausea usually sets in on uphills and because I haven't done Jeppe before I didn't know what to expect.  The first half of the route is very tough with some long drags. I had to dig really deep not to walk before the 15km mark. When I got to the 15km mark I felt ok and my running buddy suggested we stretch it to 17km. The Fat Cats bus came up behind us after we turned right onto Kloof road and they helped me to keep going. Luckily kilometers 18 and 19 was downhill. I took my first walk at the last uphill of the race. We walk for about 30 seconds and then continued on to the horrible grass section to the finish.  Overall a good day out for me. I am not close speed wise to where I should be but at the moment I need to mentally prepare myself for a marathon. 26 days to go to Kosmos... Regarding the nausea What was your effort in terms of HR % of your max during the run / events where you get nausea? Obviously walking will have a lowering effect, so it would be more interesting to know what % it is while running before the nausea starts
Stretch Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 You all did half marathons and marathons recently. My wife and I Marshaled a marathon yesterday [emoji14]Â Being members of the club who hosted the event, we weren't allowed to enter the event, although there were a few exceptions where certain members of our club were allowed to run.Just as important.. Without marshals and volunteers we would be nowhere Andrew Steer, jdwet1980, Fruity and 1 other 4
Fruity Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 Just as important.. Without marshals and volunteers we would be nowhereIt was our first time Marshaling, and I swear I felt almost like a traffic cop at times as I was standing in one of the busiest intersections of the route. Getting motorists to slow down wasn't the easiest of jobs as some of them just carried on driving the speed they wanted to, but I made sure to let the runners know to keep to the right. Andrew Steer Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 Andrew, how did your marathon go yesterday? Ugly stuff, I'm actually really irritated with myself... I only was doing Jeppe as a step up in distance with the aim of being ready for a decent Vaal in 3 weeks time. So I actually was supposed to do an easy gentle 4:40/50 odd time, as I've done nothing longer than 21km this year. But low and behold, this poephol went through half way on a pretty tough course in 2:03... needless to say around 27km's odd I started to feel a bit of knee pain which was beginning to slow me down, and then at 30km's I had a double calf cramp explosion. Tried everything under the sun to try rid myself of them, but just could not, even walking was a painful struggle. Hobbled along until 37 odd kilometers (took me over an hour and a half these glorious 7kms), watched my wife and Carpet march off into the distance along with many a club mate. My calves just wouldn't cooperate. Sitting on the pavement at 37kays, fighting my latest sniper attack, some guy appeared offering up an Uber lifeline... and I took the bait. Struggling along for another hour plus, achieving little apart from possible further injury I would have to wear that DNF tag for the 3rd time in my life. Like I said, more irritated with myself than anything... such a stupid rookie mistake. And all I've got to show for it is a big fat DNF and some unwanted knee pain. Anyways, Pirates 21km helpers run this weekend, and hopefully some more regular running in the lead up to Vaal. As always, it looks like I am playing catch up    Â
ScottCM Posted February 11, 2019 Author Posted February 11, 2019 Tough break bud. hope the knee heals up soon. Andrew Steer 1
Mats Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 Sorry about your race Andrew.  I started at what I believed was a easy pace with the idea to see how far I can get as the training was not enough and far from being consistant. Back in my mind I was thinking that if I feel too tired I will only do the 21km.As I got to the turn off, without thinking too much I took the 42km turn. From here I started to walk most of the uphills. I met Andrew’s wife somewhere about 25km and we kept each other company until about 3km to go. Those last two little hills took a lot out of me and was good character building. But, overall I am happy with my run and finished in 4:56. ScottCM, Stretch, Hacc and 3 others 6
Jaws677 Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 (edited) Different race. I chose the easier one[emoji16]I didn't know Bloemfontein had 300m of hills anywhere.O and I beat you by 42s :-)Â Well done with the marathon. Edited February 11, 2019 by Jaws677 Andrew Steer 1
Jaws677 Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 Sorry about that injury Andrew terrible time of the year to sit with pain. My one friend is also booked off and now also suffering from a serious case of FOMO Andrew Steer 1

As always, it looks like I am playing catch up    Eish! Sorry, Mr Steer. Not a nice way to end the race but you still got in a very tough 37km training run, part of which was a blitzy 21km. I hope the legs come right so you can get in some gentle miles this week. Andrew Steer 1
Hacc Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 (edited) Sorry to hear that Andrew! It was a very tough route and like I said I won't do that marathon.I agree with Barry, you have done a 37 km training run. Hope your knee feels better soon! PS. I am supporting at Vaal, tapering for Kosmos the weekend after Vaal. Will see you at the 30km mark Edited February 11, 2019 by Hacc Andrew Steer and Barry Stuart 2
Hacc Posted February 11, 2019 Posted February 11, 2019 Regarding the nausea What was your effort in terms of HR % of your max during the run / events where you get nausea? Obviously walking will have a lowering effect, so it would be more interesting to know what % it is while running before the nausea startsTo be honest I haven't paid much attention to my HR and nausea. At the moment I am moving so slowly my HR does not go higher than 160-ish. I am mostly in Z2. I think part of the problem now is I have this horrible mental block. I slow down / start stressing when I see an uphill.  I am going back to the specialist next week (new year and new MSA to spend). I tested positive for reflux with a barium swallow test. The weird thing is I don't have heartburn. The medication (PPI) is not helping. If anyone has experience with reflux and running, please feel free to share.
Stretch Posted February 12, 2019 Posted February 12, 2019 i remember when @Carpet ran her first marathon ad she said she was not sure she would do another...how many is that now? 3 or 4?
