Are you sure its against the law to split?

We had an argument the other day, and the one biker said it is allowed as long as he does not speed, and if he does not go faster than 15 km/h faster than the traffic......

In my biking days i only weaved at the traffic lights.

aaa okay, I went back to read the post. Sorry, but thanks for the other info....

horrible. On a similar note wrt illegal riding by cyclists, one of these days, those geniuses coming down marine drive the wrong way are going to get creamed. Some incredibly idiotic moron cut across the 3 lanes at the robot near the chevron petrol station, but he did it from behind a long bed truck exiting the harbour, that was caught out by a red robot  about a third of the way over the intersection . So moron decides to speed out from behind the truck across oncoming traffic, while the truck was backing up, not even glancing to his right to check for traffic. Eyes forward, merrily at bliss at the danger approaching, or deliberately ignoring it. The guy had his fancy bike, fancy clothes, fancy lights, but forgot to pack his brains.

New trend is some are coming down the N1 into town the wrong way as well. smart!

Cyclist or biker?!

Think speed was 100% responsible for the deaths.

I don't agree on the 100%.  What was the cyclist doing on an onramp to a highway?  The biker most probably strapped it (looks like a 600cc+), but a cyclist is one of the dangers that is not expected on a highway.

Another contributing factor (and this is pure speculation on my part) is that the biker was not used to riding a machine that fast and this might have caused him to ride out of his "comfort" zone, especially in traffic.

Still state, 50/50, and now I starting to add CTMP and the roads guys (no alternative routes for cyclists)

I often see a chap who cycles from the Sun Valley side, over Ou Kaaps and then treks along the M3 towards Wynberg. Always rides well to the left and always wears a high-vis vest.

I hope it isn't him.

The deaths were 100% speed. I have had a motorbike fall onto my leg in the garage, ouch, pick it up, back to the braai, no death.

The accident was 50/50, the speed caused the death. If it was much slower the chance of death is much less.

I disagree that speed was an issue.  The speed limit there is 100km/h.  If the biker hit the cyclist at 100km/h (legal speed) the cyclist would almost certainly be killed on impact.  The biker may just have fallen badly.  But I would say that the incident probably would not have happened if the cyclist was not on the freeway.  There are two alternative routes - past the prison or through Kirstenhof.  Going through Kirstenhof would add maybe 1.5km to the trip but more importantly be completely legal and safe for everybody.

As soon as someone sees a motorbike accident they automatically jump to speed as being the main cause.  As a biker this really grates me.  It's the same way that cyclists all get grouped the same when there's an incident.  Take each case on it's individual merits and don't speculate wildly.

RIP to both.

Agreed, I am just saying the cyclist was in the wrong place acting illegally and the speed killed both of them.

Could have been legal speed, but it still caused the deaths.
