V-Brakes and 26ers

Contrary to belief they work very well...

Personally I would not let brakes jeopardize my sex life!

He's got two kids...I'm sure that ship has sailed... :P

Can you actually still buy a bike (besides the Makro variety) with V brakes?

Disk stopping power is great, and they'll only go over the bars once when they pull the front only, they'll learn after that... :P

My son is 9 (10 in Dec) and has been riding for 5 years now in our local Spur Series races. He started iff with V brakes and has now got disc brakes. Honestly he has fallen with both. Yes we have had concussion (with helmet) but that's just part of the game. As they get older and braver they are going to try more technical routes and it boils down to their ability and time on the bike as to whether they can handle those challenges. Time in the saddle learning wins every time.

Honestly if brakes are going to cause hold war in your house just fit V brakes now and disc brakes later.

So i have a question, that has created much distress at home for myself and the goverment. So daddy (thats me) has a new bike.  And the kids want to follow suit, so i am deciding to get a bike with new brakes etc, which means rotors and the wife whole heartedly say NO  ITS NOT SAFE. Stick to the old ones the V-thingys ones with blocks. and so world war 3 has started  and guess who is in the lounge!! :whistling:

So my question is to riders with kids, what will you do. The kids in question are 11 and 7!!

Tell her that the kids can either do mountain biking or rugby.  Her call.

Brakes are the least of your worries. My finger went through the chainring on wipe out when I was 10ish. Grease on the one side, hole on the other. Also have 5cm scare on right calf from wipe out age 13. Chainrings are flipping dangerous!

Really, I would go with V-brakes, its not worth the argument for bikes that they won't even keep long. On top of it, V-brakes are cheaper to maintain and fix.

there is plenty of time for Disc brakes, don't see the rush and I also don't see how all of a sudden V-brakes not stopping bikes.

I don't doubt the value of disc brakes though.

they will probably upgrade in a year or two time anyway

And then some.. my son has a nasty scar on his leg, had an operation, 3 day hospital stay thx to chainring.. not to mention 5 weeks of having to dress that eina.

I have never watched skin grow back as closely as we did with that eina. But finally after 4 months I can say that it has healed 100%. (Besides the scar of course)

With that same fall he also got 9 stitches In his arm. . The leg had I think 15.. can't remember exactly but it was all bad.

@oufy, thanks for the sensible comment. its not the stopping power, its the cleaning and fingers get caught and all the rest......i got a nail pulled offand reattached with 6 stitches through the nail and finger coz of discs, but i still have them!

Playing devils advocate here, but discs with only the weight of an 11 year old on the bike, could result in more 'brake related' wipeouts, in theory. Kids are not that good at modulating brake pressure. I can remember a good few spills on my BMX from grabbing a handful of front brake on gravel....

I fear this is a who wears the pants war. pick your battles, so long as the ultimate answer to the question is not important. What is important is that your kids ride bikes - that is the best thing a kidperson can ever do.
