Just had a slice of Black Forest Gateau. It's my birthday tomorrow, so I bought the office a cake... Jeepers. I can sure feel that sugar now!

It's the first time since last weekend (12th - Raydek's birthday MTB weekend) that I've had any sugar. And I can say that I'm wholeheartedly regretting taking a bite...

Many happies for tomorrow!

A month has gone past and whilst I was very sceptical at first I have to tell you sugar free is working for me. Had a big week end of exercise this past long week end and felt way better than I usually do when eating sugar. Total weight lost 2.5 kg's over the month. Tried a small piece of chocolate sweet and had to spit it out it was too sweet.

Next month it's white bread and white flour that gets the chop.

I had a moerse big lapse last week. HUGE. It was my birthday week, so there was cake, beer, white flour etc etc... From down 2kg in the beginning of the month to a new high of 110.

Granted, I didn't exercise at all last week, but FFS this just highlights how dangerous an unchecked diet can be. Now I have to start all over again.

Discipline. As Tombeej said, "you are not a dog, stop rewarding yourself with treats!"

yeah. I know. Problem is that I haven't been cooking all of last week. Had my parents down, and they bought dinner every night. Not healthy stuff either.

Meh. Excuses, not reasons. Man the **** up, Mayhew.

Oh - I also didn't track what I put in. MAJOR impact on how the week went.

just curious to know because i am also on this sugar free "thing" for quite some time now BUT i really do crave chocolates occasionally(actually more than occasionally  ) The milk we drink is full of sugar, the white bread we consume is full of it as well. My GP said to me the other day that Government wants to implement stricter  laws regarding the sugar contents of bread but they will do it in small increments because if they ban the use of sugar totally the bread will be inedible and sales will drop considerably. So my question can one clearly say you are sugar free if one still consume above ?

There are so many hidden sugars it is frightening..........

How do you people go about to be totally sugar free ??

I have stopped using bread and milk. The coffee tastes $h*t the first week but I'm quite enjoying it now. I also now weigh everything I eat and track the calories and at this stage I'm losing just over 1kg a week with not to much exercise.

I do however still consume oats (with only a little salt added) and some Future Life over weekends when I do longer rides/races.

My other saying is in my signature below. A personal message to me from me (because I have to be reminded constantly). Works for all walks of life, but we have to keep re-learning the lesson for some reason.

It's what makes us human, I guess  .

Do you enjoy dark chocolate? If not, maybe keep trying it and see if it 'grows' on you. Lucky for me, I love the stuff.

Cocoa is seriously good for you - read this article on why you should eat dark chocolate.

There are also a lot of recipes out there for sugar free chocolate thingies. This past weekend I had chocolate brownies made by a family member that had me drooling for more. No sugar, no processed grains at all. I was stunned to hear the brownie was made from black beans and the topping was pure dark chocolate sweetened slightly with Xylitol. A high-protein, super healthy brownie that you can tuck into with gusto. And because of the high protein content, after 3 of them I was full - was like a meal.

I've asked her for the recipe; waiting for it impatiently :).

OK I've just received the recipe....

Black Bean Chocolate Brownies

Ingredients

·         1 can of black beans, drained and rinsed very well

·         2 large eggs

·         5 Tbsp cocoa powder

·         0.25 tsp salt

·         4 Tbsp organic coconut oil, melted

·         2 tsp of baking powder

·         3 Tbsp of Xylitol (or alternative sweetener of choice)

·         1 Tbsp of pure vanilla extract

·         0.5 to 0.75 cups of chopped almonds (115-140g)

·         Dark chocolate (as much as you think you need)

Method

  1. Preheat oven to 180 degrees.
  2. Combine all ingredients except almonds in a good food processor, and blend until completely smooth. Really blend well (A proper food processor is best. Can be done with a handheld blender, but it’s a lot of work).
  3. Add nuts (except 1 Tbsp) and gently fold in, then pour into a greased 8×8 pan.
  4. Cook for 15 - 18 minutes, remove and then add topping of melted dark chocolate, then let cool at least 10 minutes before trying to cut.
  5. If they still look a bit undercooked, you can place them in the fridge overnight and they will magically firm up!
  6. Cut into squares or rectangles - however big you'd like them.
