Genes tell the fat cells where to go...

Not getting racist here but just look at White Afrikaner men - big bellies and Black African women - big bums.

Its where their genes tell the body to store the fat. Some people just never get fat ever while others pick up weight easily.

I have a colleague at work that eats Mc donalds every day... he weighs in at 38kg - never picks up weight, never exercises but is he healthy? No he is not.

You employ children :o

See he is 40, but wow, 38kg. Sho!!

Energy in = energy out. If you burn what you consume, you will stay thin.

What you consume, and how you burn it, is of little relevance to the laws of science.

See I disagree with this.  Before I fell pregnant, I could eat anything I wanted and not put on weight.  At one point I was even taking shakes etc as I had to put on a kg for amateur horse racing.  I really struggled.

If I ate the same now, I'd probably be putting on a kg a week.

So something changed and I definitely don't burn the calories like I used to.

Also remember that you Cannot out train a bad diet!!!

ORLY?

In the old days, my diet consisted of pretty much anything and everything I wanted!  A couple Cokes, a couple Snickers, breakfast burritos, donuts, Little Debbie Brownies and Swiss Rolls, sandwiches and chips, and fast food for dinner.

And for those of you who are laughing, keep in mind I got over 65 victories on that diet...

So maybe you can, but you need to train loads

There can be no doubt that we are all wired differently. My gardener from Zim insists on eating bread not mielie meal, gets more voom from bread he tells me?

Some will do well on Banting, others will battle without carbs. Trick is finding what works for you. Best I ever raced was after a dinner of lamb chops and rice pudding.

By the way the chap laying into the big macs looks like he weighs more than 38 kgs.

The something that changed was your base metabolic rate (pregnancy does this as your body goes into storage mode). So energy in didn't = energy out anymore, and you gained weight. But the rule still applies.

Understanding your BMR, and the fact that it changes depending on various factors (pregnancy, muscle mass loss, stress, sickness, etc.) is the key to understanding how many calories you can consume at a given point in order to maintain/lose/gain weight.

snip snip snip

I would put it to you that the average Joe cannot train enough for that? Perhaps the Pro-Am finish with the bunch Vx and A bunch riders can .......

I know that in my case it didn't work and I do a 'fair' amount of riding

Depends how many Snickers you eat I suppose but you're probably right. My guess is that you need a minimum of 20 hours per week to survive Horners fast food diet.
