Just a little anecdote to add fuel to the fire :P

Back in my competitive swimming days there was a period that I was taking about 3 USN supplements. As a result of doing dam swims I went to go for a bilharzia test and my doc decided to run a bunch of other tests to make it worthwhile. He found that the protein levels in my urine were far too high and so I was sent to a kidney specialist for tests.

Long story short - the kidney specialist found that I had elevated levels of creatinine in my bloodstream (I wasn't even taking creatine) and he told me that if I carried on over-working my kidneys at this rate, it would be likely that I'd be on a dialysis machine by 40.

It is possible that I have an underlying kidney problem that was brought to the fore by taking the supplements but since I stopped taking them the results of all of the tests have been absolutely perfect. (This was about 10 years ago)

The kidney specialist and my doctor both gave the advice that everything your body needs is found in a healthy & balanced diet. Obviously when racing and training hard a good energy drink etc will help but taking 10 tablets a day will probably, in my opinion, do more harm  than good in the long-run.

No bubbles. ... add water after coke and all the gas will go out.

Oh yes and i ride with biltong on my longer rides. Not so easy to eat but works very well

Talking of biltong, I did the same and started on some while filling my water bottle at the garage in Houtbay then started climbing Chappies. Did not swallow all the bits when the breathing became laboured and ended up with bilting up my nose. Lesson learnt.

Chew en sluk klaar.

Used to use a ton of supplements back in my competitive bodybuilding days. Had no problems with USN Whey for years, then started experiencing stomach cramps. Switched to a different brand and all the stomach issues went away. About a year later I noticed that they had changed their "Nutritional Info" label, protein quantity was down to around 63%, from 85+%. Did some research and found that they were bust for inaccurate labelling. They later filed a complaint against Nutritech for the same thing, but the complaint was dismissed. By the way, Biogen is also a USN product, which casts doubt on Dis - chem's claims that all their products are safe, effective, tested, blah blah, as they promote both Biogen and USN.

Hahaha thanks, with the amount they'll try to claim we'll probably all have to club together to pay the fine. Seriously though, even their water bottles are crap. Drop it on the floor and if the nozzle hits, the plastic stopper snaps right off.

I'm probably biased since I use some of the products and met Albe a few times in passing.

Personally, never had an issue with their products nor the quality, and the reality is that all the other stuff out there is just as subjective.

Think much of the basis of this article is more part of a personality clash between the author, respondent and USN etc. Certainly a poorly written biased piece and not so subtle slight at Albe directly, so one would have to think for themselves and wonder what's the author's angle.

No it isn't, Biogen is a supplement company that makes protein powder etc. Their stuff is usually in red tubs, you'll see the big Biogen logo on it.

okay , so USN is the devils brew . Now what do you guys use when you race then ? And by race , I mean flat out 2 hour 95% heart rate xco race . I find it impossible to chew and swallow real food ( although I also believe real food is the best ) while bleeding through my eyes .

maltodextrin and fructose in my bottle (got a bulk load of maltodextrin from a friend so it probably costs me less than R2 for a bottle). Can also try either grape or applejuice diluted 50% with water. None of the expensive additives in these marketed products are going to make much of a difference on an xco event and solids can't be eaten / digested on such short, technical courses.

Specifically which parts of the camcheck article in your opinion are biased/untrue?
