We topped up your sealant, it was running low.

First Rule of servicing a customers bike....Take your book and clearly write down exactly what he wants done and ask the questions that you normally ask like may we check sealant. Here the customer can also mention something he might suspect like pads, low brake fluid  pivots headset whatever.... simple communication from both sides would clearly make life a breeze. Anything else that might pop up during service would require a simple phone call or sms.

Exactly....its really not that difficult to just communicate

Sure it's not much, but my riding partner also had to bin both tubes, and actually buy sealant again - to set his new tyres, and a new backup tube. So all in my R140 is looking cheap compared to 3 x tubes and a bottle of sealant...oh yes and the "top-up"that started everything.

edit: spelling

The other side of this come in when people go off on a rant when their LBS doesn't top up the sealant without them being given an explicitly instruction....

Something along the lines of "I can't believe they don't have the foresight to just check and top up the sealant if necessary... after all my patronage why can't they read my mind?!.... rant.... rant.... rant.....".

Just another perspective, although still easily solved by good communication and no assumptions.

How would you feel if you take your car in for a service, after having the wheel alignment done 2000km ago, and they send the car of for another alignment, and charge you R500 for it and just slap a bill in front of you. PS: Motor plan does not cover these costs, its extra.

At R4500 per tyre I expect a wheel alignment check at every service. R180 is cheap insurance to getting an extra R10000 km.

To me R140 for sealant top up is cheap insurance to ensure I have one less problem during my next 70km trail adventure.

I've highlighted the most important part of your post

putting extra sealant in slime tubes - means you did not check,

adding sealant to tyres that has plenty means you did not check

Surprising bill means you did not communicate

BTW - two different bikeshops, not the same shop even.

If topping up the sealant is part of the service there should not be an additional charge for it, it should already be built into the cost.

When I took my bike shop into the Giant store for a service and brake upgrade I asked about all the costs and was given an amount.

When I went to collect the bike the amount was higher than agreed and there was an additional charge for a sealant top up of both tires.

First I disputed the higher charge, the response I got was sorry I was not the one who took the bike in, but they changed it back to what was agreed.

The second dispute was over the sealant top up. I explained that I did not ask for it because I had recently had a sidewall cut which meant getting a new tire and at that point I topped up the tires with sealant. They said they always did top ups during a service but also agreed to cancel the charge.

Now I am not bashing the shop the guy I dealt with was pretty helpful and the bike ran perfectly but it was annoying.

Someone said it before, the shop (and customer) should sign a job card with all work to be completed and costs on it.

And if you plugged/replaced a punctured tyre last week and had it done then?

I would not pay R140 for a sealant top-up.

unless they give me the remainder of the bottle of sealant. And even then, I may decline.

The ask before you do is the golden rule.

The key is to communicate. If the bike shop is uncertain, they need to ask the question. Phone me, send a whatsapp, sms me. do what you need to if you did not ask when I brought my bike in. Its like bringing me a medium steak when I wanted it bloody-as-hell. If I did not mention my preference, then you need to ask.

R140 for sealant top up, that is exactly why I do it myself, save on buying a big bottle and top up as required. I can't take a fork apart but I can at least save by washing my own bike and throwing slime in.

Lesson: let's just take responsibiity when we book in and be 100% clear, we all hate surprises. At least the surprises that comes with a bill.

You really trying hard to win.

If plugged it would not need alignment.

If replaced the tyres would need to be replaced in pairs so balancing would have been done at fitment and alignment checked and possibly tyre rotation would also have been conducted. Then I would decline the alignment.

However when serving the agents typically have better alignment settings than some tyre fitment outlets. Your scenario is highly dependant on the nature of the tyre emergency.

Point on push bike tyre sealant stands. Not an issue with bikehub regular moaners making a gamka berg out of a flat road
