Bar/stem weight - how NB is it?

Been doing some calculations and worked out I would save about 200grams by changing from my current setup (truvativ boobar and spank stem) to a Renthal carbon setup.I'm not all that concerned about weight on the bike as it's got quite a burly setup in any event, but 200 grams seems significant, especially considering its what you using to maneuver the bike around? Any thoughts or suggestions?

It's a waste of money.Rather put 200ml less water in your bottle, that will cost you nothing, and have the same effect.

Really? I had no idea a lighter stem would cause thirst. Who knew.

Well if he does do it, and also put 200ml less in the bottle he would've saved 400g?!?!

So it still makes sense

Think some of you missing the point of the post, I realise 200grams off the bike isn't much, I'm asking if 200grams off of the steering components makes a significant difference to performance. I could easily save 1kg if I changed my tyres, that wasn't the point of the question...

Two cups of coffee about an hour before a ride and I can easily drop 200g. Doesn't cost me a cent.

So if you had 2 cups of coffee an hour before the ride AND changed the bar & stem you'd be 400g lighter. Now that's a real weight saving.[emoji1]

Ok so I am no expert but when I have gone for a lighter bar/stem I could feel no effect as far as handling goes, of course I was faster but that was just to justify the money spent [emoji41]

maybe if youre looking into spending money just cause, and you want a performance gain, should should rather look for something that has performance gain designed into it, rather than just being light, because light isint as good as clever when you want to go fast...

look into the spank vibrocore bars.

Weight on the bar/stem is very important - not only does it hold the front wheel down when you're climbing (with obvious benefits) but the extra weight PULLS the bike on downhills, creating a more stable feeling ride (as opposed to a heavy saddle which PUSHES downhills and is inherently unstable)

As long as its strong enough. Don't compensate strength for weight.

But I honestly can't see how it would make a difference, especially if you are looking for handling performance and not weight saving.
