DJR Posted February 18, 2016 Author Posted February 18, 2016 I still have nightmares about the first time I saw that hill. Sorry, I plead guilty your honour
leeubok Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Are you typing this slowly on purpose, to give us an idea of how slowly you were riding? Haha great story, I've never been to that part of the world but it sounds like a ride that has to be on every cyclists bucket list. Presuming you made it to the finish, well done!
Nancy Drew Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 aaah, I recall you telling me the following p.s. I still have that grey t-shirt, even though I'm not allowed to wear it anymore Ha! I still have the grey t-shirt too, although it seems to have shrunk a little bit must be the fabric
Skubarra Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Ha! I still have the grey t-shirt too, although it seems to have shrunk a little bit must be the fabric Also still have that grey shirt, 2012 H&B was my first stage race. Good memories Here is another pic of Heartbreak Hill (also from 2012), taken from the top of the climb, give you a good idea of how steep it is and the scenery of the the road to Hell. What makes this climb extra tough is that it is something like 5km from the finish, in your mind the stage is already done but then there is this b^&ch of a moutain between you and the finish line! And this is me going through one of the little streams DJR describes so well (why can't the people at S2C & W2W take photos like this?!?) And finally, if you don't have the patience to wait for DJR's full race report, here is one (almost as good) from a guy called Miles Crisp that used to be on the H&B website (has been taken off the revamped one), a bit long but very funny - describes the experience very well! thb-milescrisp-email.doc

GemmerKat Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Thanks DJR Enjoy reading your race report. Cannot wait for the next part...
milky4130 Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Big respect thanks Djr I was still an hour behind the eventual winner, but ja one can bleed at the front end as well just as you did at the backend, hence I appreciate your story.
milky4130 Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 For the newbies who must still do this event & for those who have experienced suffering up there before, Here is my analogy of "Heartbreak Hill" imagine you get home & find your Mrs in bed with your best friend, the affair has been going on for 10 years, both kids you've been raising turns out is not yours vs Heartbreak Hill, you'll choose the former every time. Does that even make sense, who gets it? lol. P.s. God forbid any of that ever happens to one of us.
Skubarra Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Same water crossing different angle Awesome photo That little camera to the right of you took this one of me

Matchstix Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Got a huge fright with that little camera on day 2. While struggling through a stream trying not to get wet cycling close to the edge of road. Then this one eyed cobra reared it's head out of the bushes, mounted on a selfie's stick as my front wheel reached its hiding spot. Luckely it did not record sound
DJR Posted February 18, 2016 Author Posted February 18, 2016 Awesome photo That little camera to the right of you took this one of me hellback1.jpgSpectacular picture! I want to go out and try take one just like that!
Lurch the stalker Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 Spectacular picture! I want to go out and try take one just like that! You're only allowed to try that once we have heard the end of this story!
Pikey Posted February 18, 2016 Posted February 18, 2016 You're only allowed to try that once we have heard the end of this story! i second that ... Not sure how deranged we must be to want to suffer through what we do ,just so we can have a sense of achievement and say I climbed that hill or I survived that race. Regardless of worst or best race ever,we will all be back. To suffer again & again & again. More more ????????????????
DJR Posted February 18, 2016 Author Posted February 18, 2016 You're only allowed to try that once we have heard the end of this story! Meanwhile, here is a splashy picture of Beattbox, doing his other sport!
