Just wanting to look into a bit of an idea here. Apart from spez who are everywhere now. If a genuinely well managed "concept " store was to open in your area , selling a specific brand of bikes and also a select few others like shimano/Oakley/ giro perhaps was too open. What would be your bike brand of choice?

I would love to see a Santa Cruz store... Simply love the brand.

Never owned one...yet...

Most LBS's stock what sells well in terms of bikes, and sometimes they do not even have stock (because of issues outside their control). Unfortunately the interesting bikes are not really available (like Pyga or Contraband) unless if you hunt down a frame through some LBS you know can get them.

The other problem is the accessories etc. I struggled to find long finger gloves that fit my hands and could not really get a nice selections of shoes anywhere.

At the end of the day you just get to know a lot of bike shops and what exactly they are good for. Some have good priced parts mostly in stock (like chains and cassettes), other go out of their way to get you specific parts you want (like a Pyga frame), even others for a good selection of cycling shoes etc.

What the Spez concept stores do well is that they have a good selection of different bikes with all the related kit under one roof. The only other brand I can see able to pull something like this off is Scott. For the rest you just need to know which LBS to visit.

Why a concept store? Rather offer competitive prices & great service especially after sales service (which is lacking currently in many stores) that's all I want from a store and it will have my support.

Yeti

Colin and Jared at ex Morningside Cycles now Cyclic went this route - Yeti and Colnago. It's a really cool looking shop (albeit small), and I use them for alot of my work even though I don't have a Yeti or a Colnago. I know they're also distributing to a shop in Durban, 2 in CT and one in PMB (I think) but not really sure if those are "concept" stores.

Sorry for mini hijack... How is the service and workmanship at this shop?

The other thing to look at is the rise in popularity of cyclo/gravel bikes, especially overseas. SA is ideal for this kind of bike. Ideally I would like to have a local online store that specializes in this, plenty of parts and frames for custom builds and spares, especially tyres. I understand that pre-configured/build bikes might be cheaper; those can be stocked, but for me the buying experience is much more satisfactory doing research and choosing my own parts. I have only ever bought a bike of the shelve once, all others I build up myself

The problem in SA seems to lie with the importers, they bring in stock and you buy what thy have.then u wait till they want to bring in again or until the new year. So shops are left with nothing to sell unless you have huge pockets to buy stock early. If I got into this business I would want direct supply from factory to my store where I sell and service and carry warranty.

I agree with you. There are still so many great brands that are not represented locally. Import and sell directly. Take Raleigh for example, fantastic range of bikes available. Also, with today's shipping companies it is easy to order in stock. How many of us have not made use of amazon, ebay, online retailers, the Chinese companies and were prepared to wait 2-3weeks for our parcel. Good service is not only about available stock, good price, but also great costumer service going the extra mile
