then the flip side would be to pay a bit more for trail use and have some form of minimum requirement with regards to access control and permit sales. I'd offer to pay (say) R50 000 a year more to ensure that permits are checked over weekends and public holidays (minimum) if I was the club if it was going to ensure that club members are not exposed to having to deal with policing rogue riders. If the land owners are satisfied that the honesty box is adequate, they surely can't expect the club to deal with the rogue rider situation, apart from discouraging it in communications and where members ride with rogue riders, take action against these members?

I still think that if a uniform day-permit system is presented to the land owners correctly with sufficient benefit to them, that they'll grab the opportunity.

To expect members to do the policing is a ticking time bomb.

All very valid ideas and points that we have discussed as a committee.  However it gets very complicated though when dealing with 11 different landowners with different needs and wants.  That doesn't mean that we're giving up, we just need to look at different ways of trying to implement a system that will make everyone happy and any suggestions that anyone has, I know I would be happy to hear it.

And especially if newcomers to the sport are almost chased away from overzealous members, it's a recipe ripe for disaster if left unchecked.

enforcers of the clubs rules, just a different club.

I thought a marshall was more of a leader, and example setter, one who helps the new people get to know the local rules and one who makes them feel welcome. But ok, you go Judge Dredd!

There is no better way to say it !!!!

If you come to Karkloof ( a much smaller club) a lady is employed to collect the day license payments and issue permits. Members can focus on being hospitable to visitors

Happy 1,000 posts! You can now buy from Rouxtjie!!!

But to answer your statement - yes, absolutely. But until agreed to by the landowners involved, or rather initiated by the landowners as they are still responsible (at their own insistence) for day passes, this will remain a problem.

Besides - they will get exactly the same treatment as other members do when confronting someone who has not paid. Just take the guy manning the gate at Tokai as an example.

The problem is partly the system, I'll agree. But the major problem is the attitude of those who think they can get away with disobeying the rules.

I AM THE LAW, well we have different definitions of a marshall, think more western movie marshall than a klaskaptein.

..in his post he says he was about to start his ride. He was a paid up member after all, sure he would have obliged to a friendly reminder.

He knows it should be visible. Why should he be asked to comply. Judging by his attitude in his post, I don't think he had any intention of uncovering his bike board.

Nowhere in his post does he say the marshal was rude to him. He just calls a **** on a shiny Spaz for wanting to enforce the rules.

Agree, as flawed as the system is the major problems aren't caused by the newbies that couldn't locate the honesty box

This thread is turning into a retirement home squabble over who called bingo first. Hahaha. RnR is right about the mods being on holiday.

In his post he sounds angry at how his oversight was handled. It can happen, some people drive under low bridges with bikes on the roof.

He wasn't even on the trail yet.

So you didn't see the honesty box but proceeded anyway, I'm sorry but that doesn't cut it. You admitted that there were lots of other riders about, did you think to ask anyone where the honesty box was?

You must be one of the club members by the sound of your tone.

Exactly..........Spent the Easter holiday (almost everyday) on the Trails at Howick and Karkloof and sorting out daily permits and routes was easy with a bit of homework before I went. Locals was very hospitable. I am sure there are rogue riders as well and I would have happily whipped out my permits if asked but no-one did.

1000 posts? .... OK [emoji3] . Tapatalk doesn't show it.

A prominent sign at the gate indicating the cost of entry denies a freeloader the excuse of saying 'I didn't know' and variations on that theme......

I admit having been difficult at Tokai once long ago because I was a visitor to the city, there was no signage, the previous day I rode free ( there was no attendant on duty) and then the next day some guy with no uniform, insignia or receipt book says I must pay to ride and tries to collect money from me .....

If you fail to communicate effectively then conflict situations are inevitable

The honesty box is right next to the big sign at the entrance to the trail...

I can't for the life of me think why a person would want to lift his bike over a fence and ride where he is not allowed.

I see people ride on our farm as if they get paid to do it.

When I stop and ask them where they are going they say they are just out for a ride. Boggles my mind the mentality some people have
