MTB Front / Rear tyre combinations

Oh I see, makes a lot more sense now. I was picturing a skinny up front with a big @ss at the back

The shape and size of the tread:

Vigilante

doff question. Can you go wider without changing the wheel / rim / thingie.

I'm regretting the crossmarks back and front at the moment - struggling with traction in front - should've consulted with the hub gurus before I did the move - but I might spoil myself with another tyre.

i think i'm running 2.1?

No. Not at all. It's an okay front tyre, but nowhere near as good as a Magic Mary, Maxxis Minion, Onza Ibex / Citius and so on. Goma looks like a good front due to the aggressive lugs.

Ardent would be better for a rear tyre.

Thanks, been running Ardent up front and Crossmark on the back. Thread still seems ok, but considering changing for Sani2C.

Maybe move the Ardent to the back and get a Vigilante up front?

Yes, you can... 2.3 / 2.35 / 2.4. All fine, no matter the rim width. Just that as you go wider on the rims, the tyre will improve even more. I ran 2.3's on 19mm wide rims for ages before upgrading to something wider.

just a word of warning - X King at the front will wash out on you at the slightest provocation. IE: It's NOT a front tyre. No matter the "width" (quotation marks there in recognition of Conti's way of exaggerating their size like a cheap gigolo

Have to disagree here, but only from my experience with Modderfontein type terrain...

I use 2.4 X-king front with Wide Lightnin rims. My best gripping tyre at 1.5 bar on the front for XC  hard pack/sand single track. Ardent race on the front being used at the moment more for reliability.

That's 'cos it's hard pack. Anything loose / rocky / rooty at speed will render it more likely to surrender than a frenchman in wartime.

OP mentioned Modders/BRB - all hard pack/sand. Not much root/rocky there...

He also mentioned Thaba trails and stage racing, which means he needs a tyre with GRIP at the front, that will be able to handle a large variety of trail conditions. X king is not that tyre, unless you run it at the back.

At a bike shop.

LOL. Trailhead has them, afaik.

Trailhead stocked them when i was last there - and ask them to fit the tyres too, as WTB's can be an SOB to get on and off the rim.

GREAT TYRES  -  you won't be sorry

No experience on Thaba, so you would know there.

Stage races, not sure you need uber grip. For me Ardent Race wins here for enough grip and protection.
