Hope the Tour comes to KwaZulu before that. Else we won't be able to see the Nkandla stage.

maybe this has been posted but I have a question

He says he stayed on the bike

He says he touched the back of the ["offending"] bike

His LEFT leg is cut

A disc rotor is on the LEFT of a bike

How then did he get cut if the bikes were pointing in the same direction?

More likely he hit a chainring (but that's just my two cents)

Oi, common sense, stop it!

We must ban these mtb things!!

Only way is if he un clipped and managed to get his left leg on the other side of the dudes back wheel!!

but then the cut would have been more focused on the inside of his leg?

And the shape of the cut? It looks like someone rammed him with a 5cm hollow pipe, rather than a "knife-like" flat rotor. I cannot imagine the contortions involved with moving your left leg in such a way that causes a cut of that shape from a flat disc rotor.

And lets not forget, we are talking about a rotor that is 14cm (or maybe 16cm) in diameter, attached closely to a wheel that is 71 cm in diameter. In order to cut your shin on that, your whole left leg would have to be up against the wheel.

... and your balls straight on the back tyre.

I don't know much, but after reading these 8 pages, I call BS.

Oh for goodness sake, common sense says he must have been riding his bicycle upside down at the time 'cos then his left leg would be on the same side as the offending disk rotor!

Reading the open letter again, I'm not sure he is convinced that the injury is actually caused by a disc. Nowhere in his description of the incident does he explicitly say he was cut by a disc.

One of our hubbers lost a bit of a finger due to a mc chain and sprocket - forget which.....

They should put front and rear cameras on every bicycle in the peleton with live feeds to team cars as well - and lose the motorcycles to improve safety - we would get great visuals too - and better forensics of accidents.

They had a live feed in the gulf last year when the race was on some car parking lot in Abu Dhabi. The commentators where scathing about the picture quality I recall but I though it was quite cool seeing the race live from Stijn Vandenbergh (Etixx – Quick Step), and Johannes Fröhlinger (Team Giant – Alpecin), Lukasz Wisniowski (Etixx – Quick Step) and Tom Dumoulin (Team Giant – Alpecin).  See link at 7:29 and again at 11:23 and 22:39. There are more but I need to go watch the kids play volleyball.

Rumour has it that that the TDF bike tracking devices have video sending capability - as soon as that kind of device starts being used, the on board camera's image quality will catch-up super quickly, as will camera battery life - demand being a great innovator.

First of all, I detest open letters. They are the most annoying medium to get your message across (this was actually more a "statement" than a letter, but calling it a letter just gets my jollies in a holly). Second of all, I think it is an over-reaction. Camera men on motor bikes and media cars have proven to be much more dangerous than disc brakes. If you are nervous about disc brakes on the wheel in front of you, sit on another wheel.

Disagree,

Risks are there. Those that are visible and where there are already injuries or deaths should be addressed immediately. the motorbike issue will be addressed but it'll take a bit of time to formulate a solution.

there are necessary risks associated with racing everyday and then there are unnecessary risks.

Disc brakes are an unnecessary risk as they do not add to the racing, or the spectacle. Motorcycle borne camera on the other hand are the source of the communication of the action that is essential to bringing a race to a broader audience.
