I've had 4 bikes since 2006. Still have 3 of those, 1 got stolen. Put my old bike on the indoor trainer, and every now and again I ride my other HT just to remind myself again how nice the full suss is

I have had my current bike since 2004. With no major upgrades since then.

I did replace the stem in 2009 with a bargain bought here in the classifieds.

Before then I had quite a lot of bikes and replaced them regularly.

As long as it puts a smile on your face? I had to sell to many of my previous rides. Not because I wanted to let them go, but due to this thing called life causing us not to hold on to them.

There is a difference between wanting a new bike or needing a new bike. If the "upgrade" will improve your performance, go for it.

But I will never buy another bike just to keep up with what industry shoves down my throat. I ride to enjoy, not the be the fastest, slickest race snake.

All depends what you gain out of selling your ride. I still rock my old 26'ers. And the amount of smile per ride they give me is more than enough to keep them around.

My road machine is a Cannondale Caad3 I built up from a warrant'ied frame and bits off another crashed bike.

I've enjoyed riding it for the last five years or so but decided to buy a new Swift after this year's CTCT.

That was until I scored a PB satisfyingly close to the 3 hour mark.

So I've decided not to sell the old Cannondale. It's obviously plenty fast!

To answer the OP's question, I'll keep this old bike until it's time to replace the drivetrain and then I'll evaluate whether it makes financial sense.

My rule is not to spend big money on maintaining/upgrading old bikes.

Rather spend big(ger) money buying a brand new bike.

I have NEVER sold a bike of mine in the past 28 years.... (or more) - although I have bought a few.

Kids bikes excluded...

You crash them, give them away or have a garage full of bikes? :nuke: :whistling:

I ride a 2009 Mongoose Teocali (Well I should be riding it more often but that's for another discussion...). At this stage of the game it does exactly what I need. It gets me to the top so I can go down. I only replace stuff if it breaks or if it is going to make a BIG difference to my riding (780 bars and a 60mm stem, dropper post and DX pedals are the only upgrades so far)

No plans to change it at this stage (Not at the current bike prices anyway  )

Do I tend to hang on to my bike and kit too long ? I see a lot of classified with high end bikes and accessories with tags like used once, or only 100km done or never used. Yet evidence in the photos may show evidence to the contrary. Some of these bikes or kit or sometimes so high end that upgrading means going to the future.

I tend to move components from frame to frame and reuse on new builds, but my current ride the frame is 2009 (full suspension and still going strong) replaced fork last year with new fox talas  (kasheeeeeeema) but my old fork now adorns my steel hardtail build. Wheelset is stans hoops on hopes and they are also 2009, and still true. From about 1986 my XC path was basically Raleigh Bomber, Avalanche, Trek 800, Trek 7000, Trek VRX500, GT LTS, GT Zascar, Scott MC20, Yeti As-r, Yeti ASR 5 and now Niner Jet9 bought as a frame only. Must say I love the feel of the niner suspension, really works well for me. Still running some components from the VRX500 on it (Hayes disc brakes).

So my question is how long have you had your bike, and why did you upgrade and did it do for you what you thought it would ?

Could not agree more - this is exactly what i was saying on the other thread.

I reckon building  bicycles has become a hobby. I get a kick out of creating them from spares I have and upgrading and moving things around.
