Winter Training

Recommended Posts

So after TD, I won't be doing any events for some time, but need to stay focused and make some big improvement over the "winter" months.

So what sort of training do you guys focus on during the colder months ? My thinking is cut back on intensity and increase endurance between May-August and then start ramping up the intensity again from September maybe. Being new to this, I would like to go in with the right approach so I come out being a better cyclist and not burnt out when I should be fresh.

My goals are to lose another 8-10 kg during this time and will aim to shave off about 20-25mins from my 2015 Shova time of 3:42.

Other than strengthening your engine and shedding some gravity

Strengthen your core

An engine is much stronger if a solid chassis supports it

It's like yawn

But put on cool music and work that plank

Power classes 2x p/w; Gym / core training; and riding as much mtb as possible  over weekends.

In the gauteng, there's really no excuse to not ride your bike over weekends...

yeah don't have money lying around for a wattbike, and the issue isn't about getting out doors. Durban doesn't get cold in winter, still very good weather to ride in. All is needed is arm and leg warmers.

Power training + gym & core work seem to be what's needed, so will get going with that.

Entering for an event in the winter also helps to get motivated and stay on the bike.

We are doing Transbaviaans in August, very good reason to keep riding!

1) Visit Bike Shop.

2) Buy winter kit.

3) Buy lights, white front, red rear.

4) Get on your bike

5) HTFU and ride. Nothing has changed, its just colder and your night ride starts earlier.

Gym, Gym gym. Wattbike and weights. And HIIT. And MTB on the weekends. No time after work before it gets dark.

What type of gym do you suggest? Strength, power, endurance. My concern is also that less actual riding might compromise skill level......assume horisontal position.

Increased muscle mass might also not be a good idea?

For endurance, keep within Discovery's proposed zones for maximum gainz
