Nothing about noisy mtbs with knobblies disturbing a nice, silent swoosh-swoosh road bike ride though.

to me, that's the sound of effort. Nothing better. Whirr whirrr whirrr whirr whirr. Makes the okes in front (on the climbs) or behind (on the flats) that much more appreciative of the help....

Aaaaaaah, the memories of fitness.

Especially if you can't seem to drop the knobbley noisemaker, not that it's ever happened to me

LOL. Reminds me of Argus 2014. Late 50's early 60's lycratard on a fancy schmancy road bike in the middle of JJ bunch or something. Shouted "HOLD YOUR LINE!!!" when we were all, fancy that, riding to the left. Shouted "Fk your line, we're in front of you" and slipped, dragged and side-rode him from the bottom of Wynberg hill to Simonstown. On my Reign X. 170mm of "I-don't-give-a-****-if-you're-pedalling-or-not-I'm-still-gonna-bob-like-a-catholic-schoolgirl" and dropped him after that...

Rode over chappies with some dude on a lovely carbon bike... made a noise like stirring a bucket of rusty spanners... I chirped him about it, and he said: "it's my knees!" I smiled, gave him a +1 and rode on...

So I could not wait any longer, I took it apart, rather surprised to see so much fine dirt inside the BB.

Everything cleaned greased and pressed back in,

I know you dont need the specific tool but the BBT 30 tool does help, the two drifts help install evenly and the blue slider cup in the punch makes sure there is equal pressure on the bearing as you knock it out.

Will ride tomorrow and report back if the noise has gone

The article was worth the read.  Road yesterday with my roadbike after attending to some tips mentioned in the article (especially the one mentioned about little bit of grease on the inside of the quick release) and my roadbike is as silent as a glider.
