I have wondered a few times about this, never done it because Im only interested in components if I order stuff and the R/$ is just stupid at the moment.

If you bought something like a garmin 520 and got someone to bring it out for you but they left the packaging behind and brought it out "for personal use" and then got searched at customs, could they get in trouble for it?

It really is just a hypothetical question though, I have less than no interesting in ever doing it, but always wondered.

(had a customs official try to give me trouble when I got back into SA from Namibia with my two year old laptop that I took with me)

thereby committing customs fraud, and exposing your friend to penalties and such. Yeah, that's a sound strategy.

My U.S girly and friends bring me clothing from the states often. I simply choose what I want know that it will fit and get them to remove the packaging and labels (tags). With the tags removed customs won't ask or care. They are more concerned about the resale.

Which I have have never done!

I have been through the "got stuff to declare" gate a few times and have ended up not even being stopped, got out quicker than the "nothing to declare" gate. And there I was trying to do the right thing. Look its not like I had bought thousands worth of stuff, it was just your usual holiday stuff that's cheaper overseas but still I never ended up paying tax that I should(and would) have.

Slightly off topic, I've got a bike rack on order from CRC and due to its size DHL(my usual choice of shipping) wanted R1600 so I decided on the ever reliable and brilliant SAPO. Are they on strike at the moment? Ordered it exactly a week ago and don't have tracking so i'm in the dark.

Yeah I dont think customs are overly difficult, it might have just been me that got unlucky. I even asked on the way out if I needed to declare I was taking my laptop and they said no.

I heard the SAPO strike was supposed to start today but seen nothing in the media about it.

I checked recently and the limit for bringing goods in is R 5k per entry from overseas.

you can get a lot of new shiny toys overseas every trip you do and bring them in and style through the queue.

Also helps to "lose" the invoice, act stupid and go through the something to declare queue as Mr Honest if you have a big ticket item. Then you can act stupid and get let through as the value you declare is under R 5k. Just have to be a good actor....

I used to take a bike bag out with me when travelling with extra luggage and bring it back with a bike inside. If asked - you've been cycling at the world corporate games or something like that....

I'll have to find out if I'd pay any tax on CRC goods coming to Spain. I'm not sure if I would or not. I don't think I would.

I guess in theory if there's no tax to pay then Hubbers coming to visit us to ride Zona Zero etc in Ainsa could always order things from CRC and have them delivered to me. I'll put them in a safe place until you're ready to pick them up. You could even use them here so that they are not "new goods" when you return to SA.

Of course it's only a theory. I'm not suggesting you should try and diddle JZ out of his new jet or anything like that.

Rule number #1 about CRC, dont order clothes shoes helmets, the VAT is too great.

Only do this is you have someone that can bring it in for you

It is not about the VAT but about the import duties on clothing items 25%-40%. Exports attract zero sales tax but you have to pay VAT at SA rates in SA once the items are cleared.

When you put it like that it almost makes me want to do just that!

Don't be surprise next time if you "loose" an invoice and Customs charge you 100% of the rate. Were not as gullible as you think. there is a lot of us Custom guys that cycle and we know when someone is trying to pull the wool over our eyes.

Ja, because committing fraud just to flip SARS the bird is the right thing to do.

Or, look at it this way - a rand that you pay towards SARS could end up at a local schooling project sometime in the future, or help pay Pravin's salary. I'd far rather buy HIM a bucket with my tax money and see him follow through on the things he's started than ask a mate to potentially face a stiff penalty for not declaring items bought abroad thereby committing customs fraud.

Myles, if the taxes that we pay were not being stolen, and frittered away on incompetence and corruption, I would agree with everything you say. Tax is a social contract. The taxpayer entrusts the Government of the day to spend our tax rands prudently and honestly. So, if we are talking ethics, bear in mind that Zupta has broken the contract.

Buy your Bell locally because you'll qualify for the crash replacement warranty. PLEASE ignore the crazy import tax figures you see posted here (25 -40!!!). I received a package from bike24 (180 's euro, excl postage) today and paid R517 tax. That equals 16.7% in duties. And SAPO delivered to my door - no sign of a strike there! About 2 weeks ago I received another package worth over 300 pounds/R6600 from CRC and paid about R1100 duties - again about 16.7%. If in doubt, import. You won't regret it.

Remember,Duties differs on all products. Some goods have no duties attached. If you want, I can mail you a up to date Tarrif book where you can see what goods attract duties and how much etc... Or just download it from sars.gov.za website via Primary legislation link.

ja bro. It's most definitely a moral dilemma. The problem is that I know many many people in service of gov't (at a provincial level, mind) and they're all doing as much as they can to stem the flow.

Granted, I live in CT so I can actually see the effect of my taxes on the quality of life, but yeah. I wish the local gov't had control of SANRAL and SAPO. With that, it'd be utopia. Oh - and education. Can't forget the single most important aspect of spending.
